Question SOP Date for '06 Models?

Wife and I have a couple of windows to take a week off for ED sometime next year. First window is February. I think it is probably still an '05 model, right?

What do you think the start of production date for the '06 models will be? May? June? July? Anyone who did the ED earlier this year, what month did you took the delivery?

Need to plan vacations accordingly....between work and the baby....

US model years would have to be one the most bizarre things around. I guess for you guys who have grown up with it, it all seems reasonable, but from here it just looks crazy!

I agree! I think car model years should be calendar years, allowing a new year model to be built October thru December of the year before to be included.

I think the real reason they introduce so early (Sep) is because the climate varies so much in our country, the manufacturers want us to be able to get a newly released model car & enjoy some nice weather with it before its all snow covered & in the body shop! That way, fewer of us say "Wait till the winter's over..." to get a newly released "next year's model".

Model Year Build Schedule

Car built in July will be for following model year. Factory at Singlefingen usually shut down in June. I ordered mine in March. It was built in May and I picked it up first week of August.

I think that another reason is that people used to always take their vacations in the summer. Since an assembly like cannot tolerate multiple absences of workers, it was easier to shut down the entire plant in the summer, let most people go on vacation, and use that time for model year retooling. Nowadays, vacations are spread out throughout the year but the pattern continues.

Come again?

Sorry okc329, I didnt quite understand. So you ordered in March and the car was built in May. Does that mean when you picked it up in August, your car is already "last year"'s model?

You Are Correct

Yes, at the time I ordered, I could have gotten either a '97 or '98 (The dealer didn't know exact pricing for the '98.) However, I knew I wanted the straight 6 iron block, 24 valve engine versus the aluminum, 18 valve V6. Today, I'd wait until I could get the 350 with 24 valves. same as the engine in the new SLK.
