Yikes! Two problems. I recall the wires coming into the trunk near the left side hinge up at the glass. Water travels down the wires and into the fiber optic splitter and corrode it. After cleaning the splitter, I put a low spot in the wire and a little flag of tape to carry the water to a less critical location (it is only drops). I don’t recall putting any silicone sealer at the water ingress point and don’t recall why.
Regarding the wires insulation, that is a result of some eco friendly laws that require cars decompose in a salvage yard. I’ve found the wires in the headlights to be particularly fragile. If you can reach them and they aren’t too long, you might get away with wrapping in electrical tape. I couldn’t reach them in the headlight assembly and spiraled a coil of electrical cable wrap down into the lights. Not perfect but they are sealed in there and they haven’t shorted out.
