Registering an ED in NJ

Well...am I getting a surprise. As of today, subject to change, it looks like I have 2 options:
  • Take a day, go to Trenton, and register it myself. Oh, how I love to leave my Twin Turbo Supra in a Trenton parking lot and have Trenton haute cuisine for lunch.
  • Or wait 6 weeks for the dealer to complete it!
While we wait we would be without the car, since the dealer says he can't issue a temporary registration on it!

Wow! Does seem to be a new kink in the ED armor!

David

P.S.

Do you still have the German tags and registration? It's been several years but I seem to recall using them for some time after delivery. On the other hand, once I had the Certificate of Origin, it only took a few minutes at the local Virginia DMV office. Is it done differently in NJ?

I was wondering about that. I take it then that you dealer didn't offer to do tags, etc for your ED car in Virginia?

There are some excellent restaurants in the Chambersburg section of Trenton if you like Italian food so that part of the trip wouldnt need to be so bad. However I can understand the need to get in and out quickly !

The last time I did it, four years ago, I picked up the car at the US prep center in Charleston, SC and drove it home. This is where my memory fails me. I don't recall whether I used the German plates to get home and then got the US plates or whether I registered it first and then took the plates with me on the flight to Charleston. The dealer was in Pennsylvania and it was all done by phone and overnight delivery so he just sent the necessary paperwork to me. As I recall, the key document was a Certificate of Origin which the DMW wants before they will issue a title.

About 15 years ago, I did another ED but in this case the car was delivered to the dealer in Falls Church who handled everything but I seem to remember driving on the European tags for a couple of weeks while waiting for the DMW to issue the metal tags.

Sorry my memory is not better.

This is apparently a new (last few weeks, NJ only) problem. Dealer will take paperwork, or so he says.

However, I need an additional original document from the shipper, where they only sent a copy.

PITA!
