W211/S211 trunk stopped closing

Hoping for a bit of advice with a trunk issue I'm having on my 2007 S211 (Wagon).
To put it plainly, suddenly the rear gate stopped latching, when both closed manually or with the button. Pulled the inside handle and the outside handle a bunch of times, it seems to click like it's opening the mechanism. When the trunk lowers down with the use of a button, it pushes in like it should but reopens as it would if there was something too large in the way.
Everything seems to work perfectly until that last moment when it latches. Any advice before I rip it apart?
Thank you in advance!

I had the same issue. It was intermittent at first, but then I couldn't get the latch lock, no matter what I did. Eventually pulled the locking mechanism, turns out there was water on the electrical connector, one pin had broken off, and because of that locking motor wouldn't go to the rest position, it pushed the lock lever ever so slightly that lock didn't work. If I pushed the connector, lock would work. I bought aftermarket lock, and now it works as should.

Thank you for the advice!! It's super dry here in TX so I am hoping that it simply came apart at the connector, as I doubt it it somehow got wet. Looks like I do have to tear into it. Thanks again for the help!
