The dreaded balance shaft
I have a 2008 e350 4matic with 83k miles and have got a vibration and a code saying something about the camshaft position, who has done the balance shaft work themselves and what do I need to know, it’s about a $5k job at a shop and I don’t want to spend that much

It's probably not the balance shaft, you should be outside of the range of that. It might just be the sensors that need replacing and they do go bad occasionally. Also check youtube on how to check if the cams are centered or not. Balance shaft only affected 2006 and early 2007 models. The parts for the balance shaft are only a few hundred dollars and there's old threads on here where people did it as a DIY and also youtube videos out there. But you have to remove the engine to do it which is why it's a 5k+ job. Cheaper to just replace the engine and do a swap. Oh and it could also just be the timing chain which isn't cheap either but not as expensive as the balance shaft.

This document will tell you if your engine is within the range that were identified as problematic. Its engine numbers that you need to look for, NOT VIN.
