dealer blew a tire road testing...

I got my car back today, apparently the road tested it, hit a potole in nyc and the tire bubled.. they replaced it free of charge.. will one new tire and the rest with 12K miles effect the handling or anything?

It may. I had them replace a tire for me (as it came back low from service) and the alignment was out.. They then had to do the alignment.

I am not a fan of different tread depth tires on the any side of the car. I also would never have my traction wheels have that much of a difference in their tread. It is not the mileage it is the tread depth that really matters. Some of these Conti. tires are shot after 15k miles and putting a brand new tire on one side could make a huge difference in tread depth. For exmple: if the new tire has 8mm of tread (as they normally do) I bet the other one has about 4.5mm. Even though it is on the rear, you will spin out the older tire in the rain and have compromised cornering performance and acceleration.

An E500 is a fine piece of machinery, you can't go putting uneven shoes on it and expect it to run well. You should at least have the same tread on each axel. On my old AUDI I have had to replace only one tire, but the tirerack will shave off the tread to match. If your car is not a 4matic, then just buy one new tire and have them match.

You will only notice a difference when you need that emergency cornering or traction and that is not a nice time to be reminded that your tires are not even.

Can you tell I am not a fan of buying only one new tire? :-)

you might have as much as half inch difference in diameter, which will affect breaking and may have a slight pull. however, it might actually counteract the everpresent pull to the right... best thing to do is replace both front w/12k miles. tough call.
