Headlights

I have an 05 with the appearance package, and was wondering if the bi-xenon headlights are self-adjusting. The reason I ask is that my driver's side headlight seems to be an inch lower than my right. I know it's not much, and after searching the forum, i know that it is common due to it being a european pattern. What I do not know is if I can manually adjust them, how do I adjust them, and will they still be self-adjusting after the manual adjustment. Thanks
Rick

In the engine compartment, just above the xenon is a large hole (almost 0.5 inch). At the bottom is a phillips head screw. Counterclockwise raises the lamp. As to the 1" difference, it should differ. The right should be a bit higher than the left (driver's side) to keep light out of the eyes of oncoming traffic. Small adjustments are best. The self leveling is unaffected. I've raised mine in equal measures.

Just don't confuse the Z pattern on these headlights with thinking that the right one is higher than the left. This is a common misunderstanding. There is a thread about this a few pages back.

Steve, in your previous posts, you said that adjusting the circle above the light will only move the light right or left, and that we cannot adjust the height? Thanks.

This must be what you are talking about? I don't know what circle you are refering to.

"But this might answer your question for good. The weird pattern that you are talking about is not adjustable. It is in the projector beam or the light bulb. The adjustment you are talking about messing with just will point the headlight to the right or to the left, but will not change the fact that they are higher to the right hand side."

What I am talking about is that the projection pattern that comes out of the projector beam is always going to be higher on the right. I am not talking about the height adjustment of the beams. The actual adjustment for the headlight from right to left is another screw that I have not ever changed or looked for. You can adjust the height, but it will always be a projection shaped like two triangles opening to the right.

I wonder if I am confusing you, but I hope this helps.

It is hard to srew something up, you can always set it back.

Tell us what you end up doing.

Steve

I have an 03' E55 & am having tremendous difficulty finding what you are describing under the hood. Would you happen to have a picture of it or could you describe what I need to turn? Thanks.

pop the hood and look at the headlight assembly. there is a small circle on the very top, which would fit a small screwdriver. That's what we are talking about

when referring to CCW turn to raise the light...are you referring to CCW when you're facing the front or the car? or CCW as in you're looking forward with the car? I tried the CCW (facing the car) and it lowered the beam so i went the other direction and it went up.

Just wanted clarification for others attempting to do this as well.

Whether you face forward or rearward as you look at it, clockwise/counterclockwise will be turning the screw in the same clockwise or counterclockwise direction.

-or-

When you look at your analogue wristwatch with your arm in front of you, the person facing you also looking at your watch, the hands are still moving clockwise to him too.

Get it?
