At least the body style is here to stay for a few years to come. The only thing that brings me solace is that my 3.2 still beats the crap out of the 3.8 and 4.0 engines from the American markets. Also, the 3.2 and 5.0 engines in our W211 are great proven workhorses that have been flawless over the last 6 + years.
My inline six had a lot more problems than this 3.2 V6. It had issues as basic as valve seals at 100k miles, head gaskets and injectors at 40k miles and of course two water pumps by 130K miles. Since 1998, the 500 and 320 engines have been miles ahead of the game! Our W211s have engines that should keep us out of the consumer test phase.
I would hate to have a bunch of problems with a new engine! Even though I plan to keep my car for a long time, I might get a tic and but a CDI 4 Matic after seeing how they get the kinks out. But even then, it might be after the W211 is retired and if I like the replacement.
Innovation is always good; hassle with new engines is not.

Hey are the 280 CDI and the 320 CDI the same displacement then? Where does the PS difference come from?

I am surprised that for theses two models the 320 and the 280, the displacement is 3 liters. Then MB has strayed from their number=engine size once again. I am then surprised that MB is detuning an engine and badging it differently to help their customers avoid taxes. I would just imagine that they would just call it a 300 if the engine size is 3.0.
The US's taxes vary from state to state. When I lived in Florida, the taxes were really cheap. but here in Colorado it depends on the car's vaule. At least the car's taxes get cheaper as the car gets older. I don't think that any state charges taxes depending on PS and engine size here in the US.

Maybe they'll rebadge the 280 as a 300 CDI and the 320 as a 350 CDI???
They are bringing out so many sorts of engines, that they run out of numbers...
The Kompressor range comes to mind (2.3 Kompressor is a 1.8ltr engine)
BMW's new 3.5 diesel is only a 3.0ltr engine
