CDI Engine Cover Trim Strip
All of the MB promo photos for the CDI show the engine with this full strip of brushed metal. Mine, as well as every other one that I've seen just has a small MB star at the front of the cover.
Did anyone actually get this full trim strip?

No, none at all. Our teams are all rubbish these days. They have been infiltrated by numerous players from the English First Division!!!!!!!!!!

Mine definately has this strip and yes it is plastic but chrome coloured 
Mine is a late 2002 model and was apparently the 2nd W211 E320 CDI in the UK, came in three months earlier than expected due to command problems so mine was pushed to the front of the production line. Could explain why mine has the chrome trim and others don't.

Good thing to de-content, in my opinion.
Better than de-contenting useful features like the rear sun shade and REST feature, but still pretty slimy.
I don't really care what the motor looks like, the less you have lift the hood the better....its not a show car its a 4 door diesel sedan.
Regarding de-contenting...
With the sagging dollar, this type of thing can only get worse.
Read an interesting article (Barrons, I think) about how European cars are actually cheaper in the US, much cheaper, than in Europe. Ironic, you would think the weak dollar would up the price of a German car. But the trouble is competition, from other car makes, so prices are kept in line with US budgets. De-contenting fills some of the gap, but its a desperate measure at best.

I asked the service manager about this who said no one had rasied it before. He looked at all the CDI's at the dealership . . . no brushed metal strip. He also looked at the MB web photos and brochures and saw the insert.
He asked the MB dealer rep who didn't have an answer either but said he would make an official inquiry to MBUSA (whatever that means).
