Gear Whine
I have noticed a faint gear whine, probably the diff. Only occurs once I get to 80mph or so. Cant be the transmission, otherwise I would hear it at multiple speeds. Anyone else notice this?

I had to replace a rear axle/diff seal early on due to smoking on hard acceleration after a rest stop. (Escaping Diff fluid getting burned off?)Get under the car & look for a fluid leak. You may not have the smoking problem.

When I picked up a loaner car a few months ago, I was driving a 2004 E320 4 Matic Wagon and I kept on noticing that there was a rear differential noise that was very audible coming from the back very loud at 20 to 25 MPH. My sedan is totally quiet.
When I returned the wagon I told the head mechanic about it and he said that a few of the rear differentials are loud. It is more noticeable in the wagons than in the sedans, he said.
I am sure that there is a fix for it. I would get it taken care of before it drives you crazy!
