Hold inoperative only when i try to activate

Hold inoperative only when i try to activate
W211 E220 2006 - Facelift, manual transmission
So i am getting a hold inoperative when i attempt to use it, and it goes immediately away... i noticed it happend every once in a while over past 6 months, like once a month when i was standing on a road that was perfectly flat (i assumed the car can detect no incline therefore not requiring the brake hold)
Now i am getting this at all times, however there is absolutely no other performance issue or dashboard icon.
i have to say, i live in Northern finland, so it is now -20°C, and my car needed to be jump started like a month ago. Is it possible that its only my battery getting old or just frozen ice on something? Wouldn't i get more error messages in the case o failing battery?
