The owner's manual for my '03 W211 (page 180) says, concerning the automatic climate control:

"The system switches automatically to the air recirculation mode if the carbon monoxide (CO) or nitrogen oxide (NOx) concentration of the outside air increases beyond a predetermined level."

Automatic climate control was standard on the E500 and optional on the E320 in MY '03. The climate control that is standard on the E320 may not have this feature.

Although it is not mentioned in the English version of the booklet, I have experienced that the automatic recirculation mode is activated only when the charcoal filter is activated. Then the car actually keeps track of the CO levels in the air. With the filter active, I can notice the system closing the air vents when I am right behind another vehicle (the fan gets louder when the vents are closed). And I think you need the 4-zone A/C for it to work.

You are correct; the language I quoted above is under the "Charcoal Filter" heading in the '03 owner's manual.

I had asked several months ago if anyone had ever noticed it come on by itself and no one ever had.

Thanks for the info merc_ht. I always thought it was great feature that never worked.. I will see if that works on our cars over here..
