E500 Calipers

Anyone know if the E500 shares the same rotors as the E320? Id like to put the E500 Calipers on my E320.

The e500 front brake calipers have much more of a performance gain... They are a 4 puck system vs the e320 single puck system. This means there are four smaller dics (pucks) pushing against the brake pads vs the one larger (single) puck on the e320. I'm not sure if the rotors are the same or not.

Will you have to replace the wheels and rotors to upgrade to the E500 calipers?

Umm, the E500 "can" share the same rotors with the E320. Depends on a lot of things... European car, US car, Japanese car, sport package car, Australian car, sedan vs. wagon, etc. So it is possible that you can run across an E320 with the same rotors as another E500.

If you really want to do this, I suggest trying the E500 calipers first. If it doesn't work for your rotors, then just get new rotors. I think the rotors are about $150 for the pair of regular rotors, and $200 for the pair of sport package rotors. Not terribly expensive considering what you might be paying for calipers.

If you're changing your calipers/pads anyhow, I would hope you would change your rotors at the same time.

The E320 CDI comes with the 4-pot calipers as standard, I thought the E320 did too, strange.

Here is the information from MB website. Hope it will help.

E320
Brakes 4-circuit electrohydraulic brakes. 12.3" ventilated front discs. 11.8" solid rear discs. Single-piston floating front and rear calipers.

E320 CDI
Brakes 4-circuit electrohydraulic power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes. 12.3" ventilated front discs. 11.8" solid rear discs. Single-piston floating front and rear calipers.

E500
Brakes 4-circuit electrohydraulic brakes. 13" ventilated front discs. 11.8" ventilated rear discs. 4-piston fixed front calipers and single-piston floating rear calipers.

As you noticed, E500 are using different kind of rotors. Size different for front rotor and ventilated or solid rotor for the rear.

The figures you posted for the E500 match the figures quoted for the E320 CDI in Europe, maybe in the US you have smaller brakes fitted to the diesel models as I believe the E320 CDI is limited to 130mph out there but in Europe it isn't explaining the larger brakes we have here.

I just checked the rear discs on my E320 CDI and they are definately ventilated and the fronts are definately 4-Pot calipers and larger discs than my neighbours E220 CDI.

Alas, us Yanks get the el cheapo brakes (single-piston calipers F. & R., non-vented rotors in R.), a 130 mph speed limiter and cheap "H" speed rated tires.

I was dismayed to discover that the much faster and heavier E320 CDI comes with brakes that are inferior to the BMW 528i it replaced.

The MBUSA website is pretty much often wrong when it comes to quoting brake specs. If you quoted this from MBUSA.com (you don't specify the source so it's not much help), then it really doesn't help too much.

The E320 with sport package is supposed to have different brakes, too. I am not sure if any genuine sport packages have been available in the USA though.
