Anticipating Price
My car went into MB's system as of yesterday with the following options:
1. Obsidian Black Metallic (+$640)*
2. Ash Full Leather Interior (+1410)**
3. E1 Package (+$1125)*
4. E2 Package (+$1645)*
5. Multicontour (+740)*
6. Rear Sunshade (+$430)*
7. Rear Side Roller Blinds (+$310)***
*Price from 2002 E320
**Price from 2002 C320
***Price for 2002 S430
Even is MB keeps the base price the same as this year's E320, of $49,115, this brings my car price to $55,415. And that's before destination charges are added. That E500 is looking like more bang for the buck if it prices out at about $60k.

I think MBZ should have put the same 4.3 liter engine from the C43 with 302hp instead of the 5.0 with same HP.
Everyone else (Audi, Jaguar, Lexus, BMW, Cadillac, etc.) is getting 300+ HP from 4.0 to 4.4 liter engines.

Putting 5.0 liter engine in E-Class, M-Class, CLK is the cheap way to go. No engineering dollars needed. Where is MBZ's engineering leadership by slapping a existing/old motor in a car and calling it new? There is nothing new about that 5.0 motor and when compared to the other companies 4 liter engines it does not stand out.
Some Euros pay taxes on engine displacement so they would rather have 302 Hp from 4.3 rather than 302 from 5.0. Torque is high in the other cars also - BMW 4.4 has 324 and Lexus GS430 has 325. Never heard of any smoothness issues from these cars.
The E430 sales numbers are way lower than E320 and data shows that the V6 E320 holds more value than a V8. The 5.0 motor will not sell more units than the previous W210 V8.
Putting that 5.0 motor with 'only' 302HP in these platforms does not impress me. Getting 325HP from 4.4 liters does impress me!
Mercedes must be running out of engineering ideas & innovations? - that is why they are slapping superchargers & turbos (both old technology) on everything to get more HP while every one else is building new engines with more HP.

I agree 99% with You.
As you said, the 5.0 liter engine is a 'cheap' and 'temporary' fix for Mercedes due to a tough competition: Lexus 4.3, BMW 4.4 and the Audi 4.X (I don't remember).
With the Formula 1 experience, I am sure Mercedes will come up with the next generation engine such as direct injection,.....
Will see in another 2 or 3 years......
I have an E320 on order and the E500 sounds much more appealing now...
The options I am waiting for are;
Navigation (which I really hope is available this FALL)
Phone
Bi-Xenon Lights
Black exterior with the stone color interior
In Dash 6 CD changer
MB has had my deposit since Feb 2002, am way above on the list at my dealer in Miami...
Would be nice to know the costs now to make the final decision..
The E320 with the 215 or 221 HP engine, not sure which one is coming, should be at least 250HP and the E500 should be 325+HP,,, For the cost of this car, I really hope the power is there, it may look nice,,,but bottom line it better "take off" nice
Am here just waiting to trade in my 97' 528i, still waiting!!!!!!
