Delayed Shutdown
Hi all.
When I shut off the engine in my car and remove the key, there is a several-second delay before the audio and nav systems go off. Is this a feature, or do I have trouble developing?
Thanks. Happy Valentine's day.

2004 model, radio turns off when the key is removed. But, I can easily turn it back on if I desire after the key is out. I actually wish it did not do this, as it makes cleaning the COMAND unit difficult.

I like it a lot as when I turn off the car I still like to have my music on until I get out of the car which can sometimes take a couple minutes if I am getting stuff in my pockets, etc etc..
'03 model, radio turns off when you remove the key..."easy entry" stuff starts moving when you remove the key also. I noticed the car stereo staying on until the door is opened on a GM loaner I had, kind of liek that feature.
porsche cars have the radio fade out when you remove the key and open the door, thats the best IMO.

some people say you should leave turbo charged cars running (turbo cooling) for a few mins before shutting down so you don't leave hot oil in the turbos. I have no idea if this is recommended/neccessary for the diesel.

Turbocharged cars....
Most turbo damage happens at shutdown, turbo and bearings are very hot, and oil "cooks" on the bearings.
Running a turbocharged vehicle at idle after driving, typically for 3 minutes, is recommended to circulate oil throught turbo bearings to cool the unit.
With a diesel engine and Mobil 1 oil, this concern is reduced and not mentioned in the MB Manual, but I still observe it.

Shut Down
Before shutting your engine down, let the turbocharger cool down. When an engine runs at maximum power/high torque, the turbocharger is operating at very high temperatures and speeds. Hot shut down can cause reduced service life which is avoidable by a minute or two of idling. Most mobile equipment applications include an adequate cooling period during parking or mooring procedures.
See hot shutdown graph.
Allow your engine to idle for 1-5 minutes to allow the high temperatures and speed to reduce and so prolong the life of your turbocharger.

Failure to care for your diesel truck's turbo can cause prematurely fail. For proper turbo care you should all the truck to idle for a few minutes to allow the turbo-charger to cool down. This is especially important for vehicles modified for additional power and heavy towing.
The problem is idle time isn't convenient. No one wants to wait on their truck, especially if they are in a hurry.
The Diesel Turbo Lifesaver is the answer! A simple, no wire cutting installation inside the vehicle (instead of under the hood) and the truck can now automatically idle and shutdown itself without the ignition key. The steering column stays locked to prevent theft.

This is exactly why I really like this forum so much. The more I read, the more I learn. I never knew about turbo "cool-down". Although it's not mentioned in the w211 manual, I will try to observe this more often. Thanks again!
