I am attaching a close-up of the cap. As you can see the tab was black (and not red). The top of the tab was broken off by the previous owner. The bottom part of the tab still sits in the cap (in my case).
I was able to remove the remaining tab after a short "struggle" and the cap as well (no "struggle").
However, it requires a new tab now. The cap will not stay on the tube now. I will buy a new tab today. It slides in easily. Easy fix.
I hope it helps.
Thanks,
Pitek

The cap with the tab is for transmission. DON'T CONFUSE IT WITH MOTOR OIL TUBE
I've been reusing broken tab on those cars for over 10 years and it works for me.
This is old topic, but what I noticed MB play games with oil tubes. The same engine has them moved around when friend with 2005 E320 has the oil tube on the back of the engine very close to transmission tube.
So observe colors.
Oil cap is red with no lock
Transmission cap is black with locking tab.

There's a thread from about a month or so ago in which the OP's car had a transmission drain/fill performed. The service guys seem to have refilled the transmission through the oil dipstick tube. His car ran like crap and had trouble shifting. We never did get the end of the story on that one...
Ah. Here's the thread:

And the lesson we learn from this story is: Know the hole into which you go.
