Tire swap on new Mercedes order

I realize that this post will put me in contention for wimp of the year, but I have a question regarding NOT using the AMG tires that come with the E550.

The tires that come with the E550 if you choose the Sport package are low profile and pretty much are horendous in the snow. Since I live in the Boston area, I need a decent all season tire. I dont want to go through the hassle and cost of changing over my tires from the AMG tire to a snow tire each year.

So here is my question (two part): What is the tire that is standard on the E550 if you don't order the sport styling AND is it possible to special order that tire and still get the sport styling package.

Sorry if this is confusing... I did my best.

Any help much appreciated.

According to the MBUSA website:

Sport 4MATIC: 245/40 R18 all-season
Sport: 245/40 R18 front, 265/35 R18 rear, all season
Luxury: 245/45 R17 all-season

I'm going to say theres no chance of you ordering a specific tire from the factory, heck you don't even know what brand of tire your going to get till it shows up at your dealership.

My advice would be to take the Sports Package and order a set of dedicated snow tires mounted on wheels from Tire Rack or another brick and mortar or online retailer.

I live in the northeast too and it's a worthwhile investment.

I have had a set of Dunlops on my E63 and it's been great - I'm considering getting the lease pulled ahead and jumping into a GL450 and even with that 4MATIC truck, I'm considering a set of dedicated snows because the 20" (on the Appearance Pkg) extended mobility tires (run flats) that come with it are all seasons, not M&S rated, so it's a compromised tire.

I suspected that your suggestion was where I was headed... was just trying to save a couple of thousand. There is only so much money that you can hide from your spouse before they realize how much these cars REALLY cost

I have a 4matic C Sport and do just fine in the Winter weather with the stock tires. Might give them a try first before you spend money to replace them, they are all season tires.

I'd second this recommendation.

The term "all season" is mostly wishful thinking.

Maybe it's good to know that these days tire companies do not so much use the term "snow tire" as they do "cold weather tire." You really need a different kind of rubber in cold weather, and that's not what you get with "all season" tires. Performance in snow, then, is more than tread pattern.
