Yeah this is a problem as Generation3 Iphones, Itouch & Ipods use USB power instead of firewire. I got an a charge converter/adaptor to work with my 3g Ipod and Itouch from the following place. It works like a charm where it charges as well as plays theough the MB interface. Does cost close to $30 though. Best solution I could find. Other members may have other alternatives.

with the adapter from cablejive, all i do is connect my itouch to the adapter & the adapter to the MB cable. that's it. The adapter allows for both charging & playback. It seemed the simplest solution to me. I just leave the itouch in the glovebox & use the MB interface as designed.

Does the iPod turn off when you are not in the car?

I just ordered this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=270444985321
With Bing cash-back, it came up to $14.89 total. Hopefully it works

Part number is A 001 827 84 04 and the Mercedes-Benz suggested retail price is $67

My dealer gave it to me. Most MB Service managers can authorize it.

Especially at the time of sale or within a week

Wheels777 is correct

The part # given by Wheels777 is correct. I was researching the same problem earlier this evening and found documentation that this is the part # required to support iPhone 3GS (my current version) as well as others.

I've sent an email to my salesperson asking them to procure it for me - hoping that they also provide it at no charge since I was quite clear that I wanted my iPhone to work properly with the car.

We'll see....stay tuned for answers in the next few days

MB is in a "catch 22". If they put this newer part # cable in all, then older iPods and such won't work properly with the command center.

(apple changed technical details of phones and iPods.)

So all the 2010 E Class has the the cable that works with older equipment.

My dealer was quite accommodating even though I called them in 48hrs when it didn't charge my iPod and drained its' battery 5 times faster than normal.

I went through this same issue with 09 ML350 in August which they resolved then also. I ended up educating them with the help of this forum and one other.

I assume that there are numerous owners that just think it's normal for their apple integrated products not to charge and have to keep disconnecting and charging some other way instead of leaving it plugged in 24/7.

I was the first customer who brought this whole issue up with my dealer and they sell a good amount of MB.

I bought this one, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=270444985321 for less than $15 and it does the job. But, you can tell, the material is cheap. If I were to buy it again, I would buy the one made by Griffin for about 22 bux.

Received the Griffin Charge converter today. It works with 4th generation iPod Nanos, iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2nd generation.

High-gloss plastic on one side and matte black finish on the other. Very light. About what I expected. Less than $19 at Amazon with free shipping (Prime).

this is going to sound crazy, but why not get an older Ipod to just LEAVE in the car?

I dug out my wife's old 2nd generation nano and have decided to make that the car ipod. this solves my problem of the ipod battery draining after the car is turned off, and would solve the annoyance of having to reach into the glove box to retrieve or plug in the ipod.

I bet you could find a used older ipod pretty cheap (maybe for the same price as the cable). I know technology should be able to handle the newer stuff, but maybe sometimes it is easier to just go along with it...

$20 or less for a converter vs. $26-$50 for an older generation iPod. No big difference. Just a matter of what you want.

Ditto. did same thing with an older 30GB ipod. I put all my music on it and leave it in the glove box. I bring it in every once in a while to update. Even absent the cable issue its still more convenient to leave stored in the glove box.

Well I am ordering the adapter for my GL for long road trips. I can leave the Iphone in the glovebox charging so the BT phone connection doesn't kill the battery AND I don't have to use the 12 volt charger as well. Kills two birds with one stone. I can listen to the music while keeping the phone charged. Just my two cents worth.
Cheers!

Just wanted to add: Ordered the Griffin from Amazon. $18 bucks with free shipping. I'll let you know how it works.

Check the cable. Look for an adapter to plug it on an electric outlet.

Is this statement true? Or is the new cable backwards compatible as I've heard from others?

Also does this cable also work with the UMI in the glove box, or is that a different cable?

I know for a fact that the Griffin product (http://www.griffintechnology.com/pro...-usb-converter) works as I bought it from Amazon last year and used it in both my old 2008 C350 and my new 2010 E350. I paid less than $30 for it on Amazon. However, I noticed in some searches that the product was discontinued. You might be able to find one on eBay.
