Wheel sizes different?

Hey everyone - have had my E350 for about 1 month and just in the last few days realized that the front tires are smaller in size than the rear tires. I admit I am not a car enthusiast (aside from great looks) but wonder why that would be on a modern car? Makes it obviously impossible to rotate tires. I do have the 4Matic and wonder if that has anything to do with it?
Thanks for the patience if this is a stupid question -
Have a great day
Mike

Many high end cars have staggered wheels. A manufacturer uses larger rear tires for traction and smaller front wheels for better tracking...

What year is your car ? I know 4Matic has the same tire size around (at least on my car). RWD E - all have staggered wheels 245/40/18 front and 265/35/18 rear. I had RWD and did not rotate it.

Right - its for traction. I did not think staggered was possible with the 4matic system. I have e550 4matic with sport package and I don't think they are staggered.

Traded in a BMW 650i for this car that had RWD and staggered rim sizes. Had to buy a matching set of back wheels (so no longer staggered) for winter to accommodate winter tires.
