Hello-a small section at the bottom of the seat back will inflate, then as it deflates another small section just above it starts to inflate. This continues all the way up the seat back and then starts at the bottom again. Hope this helps!

Have it!
I have the massage seat in my new 2010 E350. It massages the lower to upper back areas and has two settings, strong and mild. On long or short trips it comes in very handy ... and works well with the heat turned on this winter.
The seat also inflates air bladders to the left and right to keep the driver in place when turning. Turning left the right side firms up and the reverse is also true. You can adjust the amount of inflation in two levels.
I love it! Well worth the $650 list price!

Thought it would be a gimmicky feature and bought the option manily because of the side bolsters that activate in turns, as well as the ability to lengthen the seat (which your dad if he's tall will also appreciate). However I tried it out the other night on the way home from work and LOVED it. Its really good. As samkimg says - well worth the price.
