Not sure if I understand the question but... when your car is sitting outside in -20degC temperature... starting the car 15 minutes to warm up the inside is the benefit.

Ok, but if the cost is $1.500 a engine heater is a much better and cheaper investment.

The purpose of this not to warm the engine - to warm interior....
Yes, $1,500 is a little too much..usually it cost about $300-$400 for regular car. That's why I get out of my house, start the engine and go back for 10 min... i did it 20 times already during this winter. Every time i divide $1500 by number of times to figure out economic sense of this option ..LOL..

The $1500 engine heater must have referred to an AUX heater (Webasto, Eberspächer etc.) which first warms up the interior once the interior heating does not need the full AUX heater power, it starts to heat the engine. An electric engine heater that is popular in Northern Europe costs a fraction of this $1500.

Exactly, you just send an SMS to the car, either to start the heater directly. Or the the time you want the car to be warm at. It's using the car's fuel without starting the engine.

midcityengineering sells to MB dealerships, they are the only providers of a remote start system for benzes. I'm in the security and remote start manufacturing business, MB's are nearly impossible to work on vs a GM or toyota. that's why it costs a lot more.

you can even get one with a longer range 2 way LCD remote.

Do you have keyless go? I was advised when I took delivery ('10 E550) and asked for a remote starter that MB strongly discourages them particularly with keyless go.

Please keep us posted if you find a solution

The manual for my last car (a Mazda) said that the engine should not be idled to warm up, but should be started and driven right away. I just "suffer" for a few minutes until the heater kicks on.
