GOVERNOR AT 130!
Wanted to stretch its legs last night. Was late had a great open stretch of highway, and my friends NYPD detective PBA card and metal shield ready if necessary (lol).
Dam governor shuts down at 130! what a shame, so much was left in her.

4matics are limited to 130MPH while RWD cars are limited to 155MPH. Like emilner suggested you can flash your ECU to remove the governor but please be careful both with yourself and others. And don't forget to check your tire ratings also; the Michelins on my 4matic are rated only up to 100MPH.

The tires came with the car; they are all-season Michelins (not sure exactly which model). I checked the rating on them and looked up what the rating meant in my MB manual. That was 2 years ago but I'll go and check over the weekend to make sure I'm not mistaken. I'll let you know after I "hit the books"

like others have said, if you flash your ECU and remove the speed limiter, you should get higher speed rated tires.
how can the car go 187??? doesn't the speedometer run out at 160??? i thought the most it let's you get is 155

I don't understand why the governor is only 130 on this car. That seems low considering my Mazda3 with a 2.3L cut off at 120 (if I remember correctly).

Thanks for reminding me; I just checked and I have H rated tires which are good up to 130mph. I don't know what I was looking at 2 years ago

There are quite a few letters on the sidewall, I mix them up sometimes. I miss the old days where it was Z or garbage. I'm glad to here your tires are rated at 130, I could not imagine Michelin making a tire of that size with a 100mph rating (I consider them to be the best tire company, period).

I am new to mods or engine tunes of any kind, so my apologies if this question seems a bit naive, but I heard that if you remove the governor it voids the warranty. Is this true, or just a way to scare people to leave the governor activated?
Also, with the service bulletin mentioned above, I assume I need to go to a special place to have this done (like gcollier did in Scottsdale)? Do you think an MB service center would do it, or would it have to be an after-market shop?
The reason being that I live in Germany with the US spec E550 and would love to use the car to it's full potential on those fantastic autobahns before I ship her back to the States. And yes, of course I would get a set of proper summer tires rated for higher speeds if I decided to do this.
Thanks for the help...
On a side note, I am going to a German dealer today or next week to inquire about any options they have to replace the orange side markers... They are really starting to bug me. I'll let you all know what they say/provide.
Cheers!

That makes perfect sense now, since the governor is matched to the tire rating, but on a world class car like this, the tires should be higher rated and the governor raised!!!!

The reason why some cars are limited to 130MPH or 155MPH is because of the package the car is equipped with. If you have a non-sport model your car is limited to 130MPH. If you have the sport package your car's top speed is bumped up to 155MPH. For the life of me I can't find the top speed info on the E-Class spec sheet so I looked on BMWs and I found it there:
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Vehicles/2010/3/335ixDriveSedan/Features_and_Specs/335ixDriveSedanSpecifications.aspx
Look at the top speed, there are two values there; with and without the sport package.
Even all M and AMG cars are limited to 155MPH straight from the factory:

The 155MPH limit is a gentleman's agreement between the three big Germany car manufacturers (Audi, BMW and MB). All sport model cars coming out of the factory are limited to 155MPH by an electronic governor within the ECU. However, they also made it extremely easy to remove this electronic limit with a simple ECU reflash.

Because you have a 4matic. 4matics use all season tires which are H rated and limited to 130MPH. If you were to have a non-4matic 550 it would have summer performance tires which would be rated higher than 130mph and your ECU would be bumped up to 155MPH. If your car is a 4matic it doesn't matter if you have the sport package or not you are limited to 130MPH.
