Whoops, I meant F/I! I have less confidence in the reliability (long term) of most F/I cars, not to mention, more parts, etc.

Interesting 220s about the DI though, didn't know that about 'em.

Thanks for this explanation. DI seems like an inherently better system made
truly functional by the advent of the digital engine management, yet even then
the devil is oin the mechanical factors such as this. Has there been any
significant failure rate with AUDI?

MB used it in the mid 50's in the 300SL.

Yeah, that's right. And before that it was used in WWII airplanes.

I was referring primarily to modern DI which made a come back of sorts in the late 1990s.

Carbon on the valves (A little OT)

The first I heard about "Carbon on the valves" was from Walter Matthau in A new leaf back in 1971.

Hilarious and highly recommended.

Are there any specific recommendations for maintaining airmatic? I don't get the sense there is much you can do.

Don't hit major potholes. Next time you change your oil just visually inspect the rubber boots and air lines.

And if you sense that a strut is leaking, then have it replaced right away so that you don't also burn out the pump. SDS will tell you if you have a leak, and you can also visually see that the car doesn't sit level at all four corners the next morning after you've parked it.

Beyond that, don't worry about it.

I'm moving to the LA area -- I'm looking to buy the E550. Is there much reason to buy 4MATIC in So. Cal.? I can see if I was living in the North East with snow and rain...

No.

We get rain from about December to April. But it comes in big dumps, it's not constant. And then the freeways are crazy because nobody knows how to drive in the rain. So even if you have AWD, it would be the other drivers you need to watch out for (it's equivalent to a big snow storm in NYC.)

From about May to November there is no rain. None.

If you want to go up north into the mountains during the winter, then AWD can come in handy. But you still don't really need it. Rent a SUV or something for those times.
