How to make my E550's exhaust sound like an E63's?
I love my E550. When I was in the market, though, I would have bought an E63 if only it was available in 4matic. The salesperson was horrified at the thought. "It's a RACE car! You can't have an all-wheel-drive race car." I had to be practical, so I got the E550 4-matic.
I find, though, that what I love most about the E63 is the exhaust sound. It gives me chills. I am not technically savvy about cars. What would it take to make my E550 sound like the E63? Would it be a simple swap of mufflers? Who would I see about doing it? (I live in the Washington, DC, area.) Would there be any emissions complications? Can it be done without making my car sound like one of those silly tuner cars (or whatever they are called)?
I don't want a muffler that announces "Here I am!" wherever I go, and I am happy with the stock exhaust tips. I'm not looking to increase horsepower or anything. I just want more sound than what I currently get.

Your SA said the E63 is a "RACE" car?!
Anyways, it is impossible to make a non-AMG vehicle to sound exactly like an AMG vehicle.
But the V8 engine does sound awsome with some modifications.
Since you do not want it to be too loud, visit one of the local reputable exhaust shops and have your resonator replaced with an X-pipe.

I thought it was funny too. I was also tempted to point out that even Formula One cars once had all wheel drive.

The function of a resonator is to reduce the level of the exhaust note.
Since I came from the BMW 335i forum, I know that 335i sedans come with resonators whereas coupes do not.
As a result, coupes have a louder exhaust note but when sedans remove their resonators, they sound the same.
Hope this helps

As far as I know, both E350 and 550 have straight mid-pipes with resonators attached.

Now I just have to get it past my wife. I told her it would cost about around $150 or so, and her reply was "No! That's just spending stupid money!" Huh? I could list a whole bunch of stupid money if she wants...

For comparison, this is how an S550 sounds with no resonators.

I'd imagine an E550 would sound the same.

Wow, that E550 sounds horrible. At idle and low revs it sounds like there's a major exhaust leak, or something is broken. At the same time, I had no idea the resonators muffled so much sound.
My friend had an S500 with no mufflers (I believe he said there was 4, and all were taken off), this was back in '02, and we were both in our very early 20's (or he was bit older actually), it sounded foolishly loud, but MAN was it awesome, people would drop their jaws when he wailed on it, nobody really expected that out of a stately and classy S-Class. Kind of like throwing a huge middle finger up to everyone else on the road.

Or, to put it differently, is she not aware of how much I would have spent for an E63 4matic had it existed?
I found a really poor quality clip last night of an S550 with the resonators removed. It seemed to have the same weird sound at idle that the E550 above had. This is something I'm going to have to sort out before I do anything.

Ahh man, I hate you guys with V8's. Just hearing those clips are giving me flashbacks of my V8 days. I either gotta trade my car in for an 8'er at some point, or pick one up as a DD, just too much fun.

pipes welded in with a set of good quality quad chromed stainless tips
(instead of the lame fake factory tips). The result is a very similar sound to
the Eisenmann exhaust posted on YouTube - on the outside: loud but not
offensive. The problem is on the inside: under load the noise is
unbearable, while cruising it is acceptable. It is more harsh than I expected
compared to my 2006 CLS500 treated to the same surgery, or my 2005 SL with Eisenmann cat back system,
My plan is to go back and have 14 inch 5x8 Magnaflow mufflers inserted where stock mufflers were.
BTW they also had a 2007 CLS with the resonator removed and an X pipe
welded in. It sounded deep at start up and idle but under load it was Very subtle.
