I believe it was just from their test drive and not an actual breakdown of the components.

After my test drive though, the breakdown revealed the issue that I had been expressing all along. Thus, the replacement of faulty pads!

Gotcha, so im comfortable for now since it was broken down. i will give it a little more time to seat. I have 3k on the clock and it is mostly town driving and back and forth to my office, which is only 7 miles each way thru town. the brakes really don't get a hard workout. On avg I only put 8k on my dd cars per year.

UPDATE

I dropped my car off with the service department this week to look over the breaks because of some shaking in the wheel that started to develop. Long story short, they said they were bad and needed to be replaced. They did not give me a reason why they went bad, but they replaced the Discs and the Pads in the front... No replacement in the rear.

Breaking is now smooth as silk again... But, I guess we will have to see what happens over the next 5 months.

Quick question: Because these are performance breaks, is there anything special I should do to help break them in properly (No pun intended)?

Oh, and my dealer mentioned that another person here had the same issue and the service department told them that there was rust built up on the breaks from "washing the car in old weather and leaving it in the garage to dry." I've never heard of this before, but they claim it is spelled out in the manual somewhere... I have yet to look. They also replaced his breaks.

Any one else have upadtes?

Cheers!

Shaking in the wheel is something I did not experiance. That sounds like a warped rotor issue, which would be odd on a new car. I have been pounding on the brakes lately, as recommended in this thread, to properly "seat" them. I must say i do feel some inprovement from this. All I can say is my dealer broke down my system and after a full inspecition deemed them as normal. I will keep on "pounding" for a little and see how the car is @ around 5k on the clock.

Brought it into the second dealership today for this problem. After 5 min of a test drive, w/ him driving and me in the passenger, he heard the noise and said it def sounds like the rear rotors are warped. Manhattan had the car for 2 days, did road test (nothing detected), supposedly broke down and inspected the system and found nothing. Thumbs down for their service and up for White Plains.
I will post again after I get the car back and all the details on the work. They are naturally going to check the front as well, but the tech is confident it's just the rear.

MBUSA covers brakes, wheel alignment, and road force wheel/tire balance for the first 12 month/12000 miles whichever comes first. If brakes components are replaced with in this period repair is then covered for one year/unlimited mileage from date of replacement invoice.

haha, I was just going to post a question about this and you answered it. That's what I figured. My car is now 6mo old, so the warrenty clock on the brakes was just reset and I get one year on them from now.
Hopefully it doesn't happen again though.

Yes, after washing the car, it should be run out with several moderate to hard braking applications. This will reduce the chances of any rust on the brake rotors and subsequent warping.

MB has an issue on their hands. I'm 40 and have owned a number of new cars, starting back w/ my first (an 87' Mustang GT) and never have I had to replace the brakes and rotors on a new car. Also the fact that more and more of you are chiming in on this, it is definitely an issue. I believe it is isolated to 550s so far, cause that who seems to be having the issues here. Anybody w/ a 350 having any issues?

My problem was only with the front slotted rotors. Everything seems fine now that they have been replaced. My MB service advisor noted that my E wasn't the only one she had seen with this problem, but didn't state whether it was a 550 vs. 350 thing.

Funny you mentioned this again... I have about another 6K mi on the replaced brakes and I just noticed the wheel shimmy again when breaking at high speeds. I will have them checked out again next week and let you know what they say.

I really hope I don't have to go through this every 6-8 months.

My problem, never lead to a shimmy, it was my rear rotors that warped the most, and that caused a warping sound, when I pressed the brakes. The fronts however were also starting to go, so they replaced all around. You get an all around. You own the car or lease? Mine is a lease.

I own. They only replaced the front breaks last time. I'll set up an appointment next week or so and let you know what happens.

Replaced... Again

So, I dropped off my car and they had to replace the pads on the front... Again. The service shop said that I am responsible to pay the labor (~$140) portion for the repair because breaks "do this." I'm sure a little meaning was lost in translation between my broken German and his broken English, but I don't buy it. This car is 11 months old and I've had the front pads replaced twice and the discs replaced once!? I just don't think this is right. The car has less than 15,000 miles for crying out loud!!!

I will be writing a letter to Mercedes about this issue... I'll let you know if I receive a satisfactory answer.

Picked up a new 2010 E550 on x-mas eve. Drove the car home and noticed slight shaking during braking. Figured it may be just park on the lot for a while and just need some hard breaking. Shaking only got worse. Took it in to the dealer at 215 miles. Service foreman called me the next day to tell me that he's never seen it before, but all 4 rotors are out of spec by more than 0.005"!!! All 4 rotors and all pads replaced. Nice. Should have avoided the lemonade at MBLN.
