This seems to be the question of the year right now, lol. Practically can't avoid comparing the two.
Lots do actually with an E350 (which is just so mismatched), but an E550 makes it a closer game.
Each have their pro's and cons. After driving both, I'd assume it'd come down to a Heart (E63) VS Brain (W212) situation.
I don't know which I'd go with, but I do know which's driving experience gets my jollies up just thinking about it. I'll be in the market soon probably, and will be weighing things against things.

How fast do you like to go? If you want a very nice car with ample power the E550 will serve you well. If you want something that will keep pace with (if not dust) Ferraris and Porsches then you need AMG.

I wonder what the responses would be like on the W211 forum? Hmmm maybe buy the E63? you need to drive both yourself . Before I purchased my E350 I was dead set on getting the coupe until I test drove it & the sedan back to back. Two very different cars. I thought the coupe was better looking but felt too C-class.

The E550 has plenty of get-up and go, but if you need/want "raunchy"... get the AMG
If you already have a toy in the stable... get the w212.
If you have winter to contend with... get the w212.
If you plan to keep the car for more than 3 years... get the W212.
Cost wise, I imagine that both are good deals. One has left depreciation for another to bear. The other has a MSRP that was readjusted downwards.
A test drive in both would be meaningful.
I appreciate your predicament... let us know what you decide.

E63 will be more of a toy, fun, etc. You get some cool things like gorgeous seats, suede headliner, and one of the best fire-breathing N/A motors avail today.
IMO, if you want to pamper a car, and drive it for pleasure, while garage-queen'ing it, E63 is the prime choice out of the two. If you want something to let work for you more-so, W212 E550 is the better choice.

Half the time I don't think about driving an AMG. Until I need to pass on a two lane highway ..

Nice. I wanna Test Drive one soon (should be getting my whip sold asap).
The beauty of Benz is how sedate their cars could (should) be when you want them to, regardless of race-savvy performance.
First thing I'd do if I got an E63 is go wide open on the exhaust, I'd want that baby to scream! Although, downside is you'd lose that serenity the E-Class can offer.

Yeah, it's a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde sort of car.
I took a friend of the family out for a spin a few weeks ago. She doesn't know cars, but knew it was a "Mercedes." She commented on the nice smooth quiet ride and comfy seats, etc.. Then I dropped it into 4th on the freeway. Her eyes kind of bugged out. I told her sorry, my right foot just had a spasm. She thought I broke the car because it "got so loud all of a sudden."

Nice. I remember when I bought my car, the salesman took me to the Bank (to withdraw cash) in a CPO E63 on the lot, he was ripping that thing, like sideways on a public street, it was both funny, and disconcerting, lol. How much fun it was in that "hot-rod" sense really makes me want to get something "fun" again, now that I recollect the experience.
Things like the suede-headliner and outstanding seats really mean a lot to me as well, instantly impressed me when I was inside and reminded me it's a Premium/Performance car.
Now if someone wants a helluva value, CPO E55 is just ridiculous. I'd be all over it, just if I'm gonna get into another W211, I think I'd have to have it be at least a little aesthetically different than mine, although that aspect will cost a lot more $$ than a 55. Call me crazy, but I like the N/A motor of the 63 better, just more my style.... Maybe it's the more worry-free experience, sans S/C and all the extra parts/aspects that come with it.

I know this is a little off topic...but I just bought a w212 E63. I test drove the E550 along with the E63. Wow, I felt a huge difference in the drivability of the cars and that is before I stepped on the gas pedal. I think buying an AMG car is like buying two cars in one, so at the end of the day, I found it cheaper than owning a Porsche and a Mercedes at the same time. I am sold on how much fun the car is to drive everyday!!!

That's what makes these such a great "multi-tasking" vehicle, imho.

My previous car was an 08E63 - Lease return after 2 years.. What I miss most is the Sledge Hammer Power and ofcourse starting that baby up and hearing the roar of the exhaust..Believe it or not i dont feel much of a difference in the handling of the W211 E63 vs the W212 E550.. The 550 handles superbly.. The power is more than sufficient in my 550 and i enjoy the extra space inside. I miss the alcantara headliner the most as far as interior is concerned. The 550 seats are very comfortable, i dont have any objections. The 63 seats are sportier ofcourse but its not something that i cant live without.. In General Im really enjoyinh the 550 for now..
