2011 Mirror Compass

Question for the 2011 owners. Can you turn your Mirror compass off? I test drove a 2010 and you could turn it off. I picked up my 2011 and there was no button. The manual however, still refers to the button. I just want to know if my mirror might be a defect or did they remove the option to turn it off. TIA

The button was removed for 2011. The operations described in the manual can now be accomplished by inserting the end of a paper clip into the hole next to the light on the driver's side of the mirror.

Thanks, but it seems as if that hole is only for calibration. I can’t seem to turn it off. It should be no big deal but it annoys me... A red LED burning in the upper right corner of my eye. Why include it anyway, especially in a car with a Nav unit.

Thanks. I think I will just tint my windows and call it complete. I have always changed my wheels on every car I owned until I moved to Mercedes. I will stick with these wheels.

Your eyes will use to ignore the red light soon. I have mirror with compass in BMW and I do not know how to turn it off too, but after some time I stopped notice it.

A bit off-topic, but a few weeks ago someone in the W211 forum complained how there was no compass built into the rearview mirror like BMW... even though you can access the compass in the multi-function display and see the direction you're going on the GPS...

Well I understand that some people like this feature and some dont, some even HATE it. But it would be nice if I had the option to turn it OFF. And speaking about having the option to turn things off... dont get me started on the headlights... seriously WTF.

Bumping this old thread to see if anyone has figured out how to turn the mirror compass off in the past few years on the 2011 model. Paper clip only seems to work for setting zone and calibration.
