Not illegal in most places in US with exception of a few places. In any case I wouldn't want the thing running 20 min.... Maybe 3 or 4 just to get it warmed. Bad to start off with super cold oil too.
I'll look into the engine heater you suggest though. Hadn't really considered it but seems sensible.

I have a 2011 GMC Sierra Crew Cab with remote start (stock GM part). The truck will only run for 10 minutes max and then shuts down. You can only start it one more time after that.
I used it during this past winter up Quantico, VA and it was nice to jump into a warm toasty vehicle....
