E550 Exhaust - Sedan vs. Coupe

I am considering a 2011 E550 Sedan. Love everything about the car except for the quiet exhaust. I got my wife a 2010 E550 Coupe a few months back and the exhaust note on her car is considerable deeper/throatier than the E550 Sedan. Can anybody help me with the differences in the two exhaust systems? Maybe the Sedan has resonators and the Coupe doesn't, but that's just a guess on my part. Hopefully, there is an easy way to make the Sedan sound like the Coupe. Would really appreciate hearing your thoughts and opinions. Thanks!

That is a really surprising observation to me. I have a 2009 550 and the exhaust sounds fantastic to me. Not like a 63 but definitely plenty throaty and loud. I wish I could help you out but have no idea what the answer is to your question. My suggestion is go in to a dealer and ask one of the techs.

I agree its a relatively quiet exhaust except when you push it. even stansding behind the car at startup its soft...unlike the e63 which almost knocks you over.

Ultimately its designed for quiet right? Ive heard similar comments on the new bmw 5'ers.

reviving an old thread...

Has anybody modded their exhaust to sound close to the coupe?

old 5'ers too. i had a 550i and the exhaust tone was very muted. heard the engine far more than the exhaust. the 650i also has the same engine, but the exhaust tone was much more audible and nicer.

i have a e550 coupe and i think this is the best sounding OEM exhaust i have heard. its tone down when cruising, but not silent. and definitely gets louder when you push it. best of both worlds. good luck sedan folks, can't imagine it'll require a whole lot of work.

Remember that the E550 coupe is built on the C Class frame, not the E Class. (Look at their wheelbase measurements).

Maybe it has the C63 exhaust system?
