Interesting thread - anyone here bending their 18" AMG wheels!?

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w212...ne-time-5.html

Seems more people are having issues with non-AMG wheels, but anyone here have any issues with damage to their staggered AMG wheels?

Also went to a lot today to check out the AMG wheels and noticed some had six split spoke AMG wheels and some had five split spoke AMG wheels - anyone know why?

If you want to drive on "rubber band" 18" tires, then you'll get to experience this when you least expect it. The 17" tire/wheel combination have extra sidewall to potentially absorb the impact better than the 18" ones. I bet that the person posting in the other forum had Pirelli PZeros on his car. Those tires had the worse impact resistance of any tire that I have ever owned. I replaced 3 tires/ 1 rim on my Volvo S80 years ago when I hit (or even looked) at a pothole! The wheels get damaged when the tire loses pressure from the bead separating from the rim. Then the rim gets to have the impact too.

These cars are heavy. Sometimes the impact doesn't bend the rim, but there will probably be a sidewall bubble developing in the tire due to ply separation.

'10 models are 6 spoke. '11 models are 5 spoke.

Nope. Found the answer. Option for 2011 E550 is 5 spoke. Option for E350 is six spoke. Lots of misinformation on here guys so be careful. Anyway, anyone have probs with six spike with continentals?

Well, you're both right. The E350 with the Sport Appearance package is a 5 spoke wheel. You can specify the twin 6 spoke AMG wheel for an extra $760. The twin 5 spoke AMG wheel is standard on the E550 Sport.

So which one is better? My car has a 6 spoke wheel, see pic. Should I start worry?

That doesn't make sense either actually. The '11 E350 definitely is available with the twin 5-spoke AMG's also. Members on this Forum have it, and I've seen '11 E350's at the Dealer mixed between the 5 & 6 spokes with the "Wheel Package".

Makes no sense indeed. Maybe M-B had lots of 6-Spokes leftover, so they're just luck-of-the-draw mixing them for the time being?

Wheels

You guys are both right and both wrong...the 11's are available with either the R06 or R08 package wheels...I know this because I specifically did not want the 6 spoke wheels and when my car arrived it had them...apparently MB is not great with inventory items and changed the package # of the 6 spoke wheels from '10 model - '11 model. So when they added the 5 spoke wheel for 11 it was still calle dthe R08 package and they changed the 6 spoke to R06...which added to the confusion in ordering - since like any normal person - one would assume that the "new" package number (for 2011 R06) would be the "new" 5 spoke wheels - well it wasn't and that's why mine showed up with 6 spokers and they did a quick change to the correct 5 spokers with one from inventory.

I have heard of both AMG's and stock 17's bending, but that's a NYC thing for sure - our roads suck around here and this winter is only gonna make it worse.

I actually like the six spoke better and that is what I am trying to get hold of. How about a couple side by side pics with the wheels on the cars?

Side by side 6 vs 5 spoke

Take a look at Dema's sig for the 6's and here are my 5's - should be as close a comparo as you can get both Palladium Silver

Stylistically speaking, on a personal level, my favorite W212 wheel happens to be the non AMG Sport wheels, then the AMG 5-Spokes, and the AMG 6-Spokes in far last.

Crazy how style preferences vary from one person to the next. My order from best to worst would be six spoke 18" AMG, 5 spoke 18" AMG, 5 spoke 17" NON AMG on luxury model, then far last would be standard 5 spoke 18" NON AMG on sport model.

LOL, indeed.

What's funny is before I got my car, I was CERTAIN that the non-AMG 5-Spokes were actually the AMG Option, as they just looked so much better to me, I figured that had to be the case. When I got my car, I made sure it had those wheels, and I was shocked to see that they were the Standard Sport/no cost wheels. I'll admit, I do wish it had that little "AMG" engraving on it, as my W211's wheels did, but oh well.

For the lack of diversity in regards to styling Packages on the W212, at least M-B has a nice variety of wheels on the cars, to keep things interesting.

Well, now I have gotten into fear mode regarding changing from the stock 17" wheels to the AMG 18" wheels. This is my wife's car. We live in Houston and roads are pretty rough in places, but not hardly any potholes at all. I am not sure I want to take the risk of putting on the 18" wheels and have her hit something that may cause a tire to blow that would not have caused a flat on the 17" wheels.

5 spoke wheels should be lighter, easier to clean, and provide better ventilation for brakes.

Well then, I would think six spoke would be stronger?

does this apply for 19'. I have 19" and pirellis. never had a problem. Although, i'm usually pretty good about avoiding pot holes, i can't avoid them all.

I've hit some pretty good, never had any issues. i hit 1 pot hole, ended up with burring on my rim wall, but no dents or significant scratches.
