YMMV.

Looks like you were well awake during both incidents. Like you said, we should not rely on anything artificial, but when AA alerts I would take it seriously.

Probably in the manual but...

I was leaving work the other day and didn't change out of my gym clothes...my keys were in the pocket of my work clothes - but figured all should work fine anyway. I threw my bag in the trunk and tried to close the trunk lid...both with the trunk only button and the lock button - as well as manually closing the trunk. The trunk popped open every time - until I realized that the keys were in there.

Isn't it nice to have a car smarter than we are.

I have gotten so used to Keyless Go, that I locked myself out of my Ford F-150 by leaving the key in the ignition and pressing the auto lock button on the door as I exited the vehicle.

I travel (fly) often and whenever I plan to go away for a few days or more I always pack my keys in my suitcase so I dont lose it. I throw my suitcase in the trunk, close the trunk and drive to my destination. I do the reverse when I return home. I have never had an issue closing my trunk with my keys in my suitcase.

Me either. I can close the trunk just fine from the close button if key is in trunk. It just is that the lock button is disabled.

Above reverses when I move the switch to the arrow pointing right.

I have Bi-Xenon lights.

After buying this car and asking about the lights my dealer told me that it used to be that with the switch you also needed to put the blinker ON to the side where you want the parking light ON. He said that this is not the case any more. I don't know if this was changed between W211 and W212 or was it changed somewhere in the middle of W212s.

Little more about the parking lights.

If I set my light switch to either left or right arrow and the car is running there is no light on the car front or rear. The one side parking lights come on after car is shut OFF.

Arrie, I think I just found out about that "loophole" as well.

So, if *while driving*, we put our knob on "P" right or left, ALL lights turn off, correct?

Mystery Solved!

I discovered that you can lock your key fob in the car (P2) or trunk, from either the door or trunk if you have the other fob in your pocket!

Makes sense, actually. Assume you and your spouse both have keys to the same car and you go out for a drive. You park, exit the car to shop. Your spouse decides to leave her purse in the trunk, with her keys in it. You can lock her bag in the car, including key fob, as long as you have the other fob in close proximity, like your pocket.

Yes, correct IF it does not turn lights ON when vehicle moves. I did not test for that...

Yes, that is how it works. If one key fob is outside close to the car you can lock the other one in the car.

How much sense it makes you can always find an argument. How about if your wife takes you to an airport or train station and leaves that purse in the car with the key and walks you to the train. Train leaves and so does the key with you, and her key is in the trunk...

...well, women don't walk in public places without their purse especially while shopping...

Good point. I suppose there isn't a perfect configuration and each comes with +/-'s. All the more reason to take a limo to the airport and leave the car tucked away in the garage, I suppose.

I should've clarified - my doors were still locked when I was attempting this.

Man, you guys are really stuck on this key in trunk thing (I don't know why anyone would ever need to leave their key in the trunk?).

Are that that little secret features existing in our cars?

Not such an issue when the car has keyless go but my previous ML500 and my wife's ML 320 CDI have the powered hatch but no keyless go.

This means that you have to open the hatch/boot with the key if the car is locked and if you also have a large load to put in the rear it is not hard to inadvertantly put the key down on the boot floor while loading and then press the close button.

I have done it on the ML's a few times but have always realised just before the hatch shut and aborted the closing.

Thumbs up Found this tidbit interesting ....

You might appreciate this guys. Other day, had the windshield front defrost on max, making a lot of noise, clicked on the voice command function and the car automatically turned down the blower until command entry was done ... that is smart.

Does it too with the AC in the summer. I wish it would roll up the windows when they are open cuz she never understands me with the wind noise.

it is also working for other cars, at least in Europe.
I think it is standard software.
Ford, VW, Seat, etc.
For Toyota Prius it is Extra programming, check the manual.

It does but only if the navigation system is guiding you to a place that sells expensive stuff that she likes.

I have about 20k miles and find aa to be quite good. Oddly it's more likely to kick on and seems more sensitive when using distronic which I suppose makes sense.

I agree though you shouldn't rely on this stuff. It just gives you a better chance.

Ok, tested for this. Car has no light on when driving with light switch on one of the parking arrows.

Checked it on mine.

If I have the doors locked and leave key fob in the trunk and try to close:

1. Locking button on trunk lid is inoperable.
2. Trunk closing button closes the trunk but it pops open after it closes.
3. Trying to close manually does not work either, It won't catch and trunk pops open.

If I have doos unlocked and leave key in trunk I can close the trunk from either closing button or manually and it stays closed but the locking button still is inoperable.

I find this is very smart logic. It won't let you lock the keys in the car or trunk. It won't let you close the trunk if key is in and doors locked as you cannot unlock the doors if key is inside the vehicle. You need to get that key fob out to unlock the doors.

I found this interesting and use it on a daily basis. When the car is fully stopped, open the driver door, the transmission automatically switches from 'D' to 'Park.' Now when exiting the car, I never push the 'Park' stalk, just open the door and hit the "Stop/Start" button to kill the engine. Very convenient.
