If its really is all stop and go from block to block I am not too surprised at this mileage. Where do you live?

Another thing you've probably done but worth mentioning is check the air filters. That can cost you mileage if you've sucked in a lot of dust. Also try a different brand of gas for a tank if you dobt normally change.

I live in L.A, so traffic central. I'll monitor it more-so, but it seems to me to be the nature of the beast. I certainly don't drive aggressively, but I'll probably pay attention to the way I throttle it, and see how the MPG's look after that.

I find that it's at its worst during a day full of errands, i.e lots of low speed parking lots really bring the MPG down.

Do you guys have 91 RON petrol or is it 91 ROZ.

We have 91, 95 and 98 RON and 95 is recommended to for the M273 5.5 litre motor.

I normally use 95 but 98 also gives a significant improvement in MPG but of course it costs more.

It's AKI here which is (R+M)/2). RON + MON by 2. The highest AKI (called octane on the pumps) is 91 (in California.) That comes out to about 95 RON. The minimum for the V8 5.5 and 6.2 is 93 RON according to Daimler. The ECU is tuned to anti-knock at a minimum of 93 RON. But yeah, 95 RON is on the money.

Good stuff here starting on page 2: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...-question.html

I wonder if using s mode would actually be better for mpg in stop and go traffic? Figure when it's just stop and go, frequent starts in first gear would be better than second gear. Giving the engine more mechanical advantage should require less fuel to get moving. Of course if you're cruising along at 10 to 20 or higher you'd be better off in c mode to keep rps lower. Downside I can see is you're causing the transmission to work harder

What do others think? Does this make sense?

I agree fully. I have a W212 E63 and a couple new E350's in the family and the 350 gets maybe 1 mpg better in the city and maybe 2 better on the highway.

The 350 motor has been around for donkeys years, is underpowered and not exactly refined by modern standards. Have you seen the mpg figures published by bmw for the turbo I-6 motor used in the new 640i? mid to upper 30's on the highway! Lexus's current GS350 will get low 30's on the highway and the list goes on. The bmw's will all have start/stop after march production I think and that likely is one factor making their city figures so much better.

They are all light years ahead in technology and even ford, GM and Hyundi have direct injection gas motors putting out over 300hp in 3.5L form and they all get 30+ mpg on the highway.

I love the W212 since it is one of the best body structure I have ever seen in recent times but that motor is just about 4 behind the curve.

Actually the current 3.5L isn't that old at all, I mean, it debuted in 2006 correct? That's close to when the 5.5L debuted.

M-B could have given it a little boost here or their in power, but that wouldn't have affected efficiency perhaps.

There is a new 3.5 Direct Injection V6 motor that has more power and better economy and is already being used in Europe but apparently isn't in many countries because it requires very clean (?low sulfur ) fuel.

I believe it will be in the Australian 2012 model not sure about anywhere else.

Having said that your model 3.5 V6 is not far behind the 3 valve M113 5.0 litre V8 that was in my previous W164 ML 500 but in real world driving the torque of the 5.0 litre would run away and hide from any 3.5.

I just had to share this. I now drive 55mi back and forth to work, I normally avg 19mpg on the way to work and 22mpg on the way home.
For some reason the car thought it was getting 26.6mpg on the way home today
The truth is the car only avgs 20mpg with 90% highway and cruising at 65-70mph.

The first 5 to 6 miles of my return commute are in traffic with many stop lights, sitting through a few lights for 2 or even 3 cycles before clearing the given intersection. Even through that section of commute, my mileage is ~19 mpg, and it quickly improves to ~24 for the total. As posted in another thread, my commute to the office returns a rather connsistent 24.6 miles on an 18 mile commute.

The only thing that caught my eye is the temperature. You are so lucky to be in 70 weather. I vaguely recall what 70 degrees feels like

lol, I am so happy I left NJ, its sunny and 60-70 everyday out here. Of course when summer comes it will be 110+ out here while its a nice cool 70-80 in NJ.
The 100mi daily commute sucks compared to the 30mi I had before though. Its funny that my gas milage avg only went up 1-2mpg.

Winter gas formulations will also impact your mileage by a few mpg's. I know, My Bluetec regularly returns about 40 on strictly highway driving during the warm months. As soon as the winter fuel hits, it drops to about 35-36mpg.

The reading from the trip computer has approximately 3% error. They way I calculated the MPG is by taking the overall mileage and the ammount of gasoline per fill up. Input these two values and my "Gas Cubby" software will calculate the rest.

My average over 6 month of ownership, 8988 miles of driving is 20.08 MPG. You can see in the chart I provided whether I am driving locally (mix driving) or out of state (mostly Highway). And you can also see, the MPG is worsen during winter driving.

Don't forget that in winter the car works harder in the beginning to warm up (keeps the revs higher when you first start the car up) and also the air is denser so it takes more effort for the car to cut through it.

Today ran almost a full tank of Chevron 93 octane fuel with calculated 24.7 mpg. Car said 25.1 mpg. Driving speen almost all 79 - 80 mph.

Have been using mostly shell and mpg has been in 23 mpg range with similar driving.

I must say I noticed improvement with Chevron fuel. Think will start looking for it again. Had similar experience with my Crown Victoria long time ago now, which always seemed to like Chevron 87 better than others...don't know why.

You know its funny you mentioned this. I've been using the Shell station closest to my house for years and always get the same mileage out of my car between tanks if I do my usual routine. However, I filled up at an Exxon last time and got way better mileage then on Shell. Whenever I drive up north to Canada there are primarily Sunoco stations on the way and I get worse milage out of them then on Shell. I haven't tried Chevron yet but if there is one around me I'll have to check it out and report back. I was always under the impression that Shell and BP had pretty good quality fuel but my brother showed me an article saying that Shell scored pretty low on the list. It makes sense now why I get a little bit less out of a tank of Shell.

It will get worse!

The EPA has approved E15 for sale across the US, which means more stations will carry it instead of current E10 due to limited number of pumps, storage tanks and limited number of distributors handling just E10. Pure gasoline has pretty much disappeared in my area of S.C.
Consumer Reports did a test and found a 27% loss of fuel efficiency when using E15 instead of pure gasoline.
Write your Congressman and Senator to stop subsidizing ethanol in gasoline. The processors get 47 cents per gallon for ethanol right off the bat.
As for measuring MPG, I compared my computer read out to the old fashioned fill it up and check mileage that way. Did three tank fulls.
Computer showed a little less MPG than my method, so I think it is pretty accurate.
There are way too many variables in testing. Consumer Reports got 19 overall when they tested a 2010 Sport version and their method is probably the most accurate of all.
That said, the time of day, temperature, humidity, person driving, changes in elevation, brand of fuel, etc., etc. are going to effect it.

You must be a CPA or Actuary. Most folks do some basic math and estimate MPG - you provide a detailed chart.

man you guys have it easy compared to what I'm getting on my CL55. 8-10 mpg city and 16-18 hwy. Keep in mind I drive very conservatively....it's ridiculous...especially with gas prices slowly creeping up to $4 a gallon

It's my habit to always record the data of everything. I'm an engineer and data is everything. But trust me, I am not worry about the gas mileage.. Driving this baby alone is a pleasure. I will put a lot of milage on this car! Woooom

Off topic - and just for fun - what non-work related data have you recorded?

My brother is an engineer and once did an analysis showing beer sales from his friend's store on a weekly basis plotted against the win/loss record of the Cards during the baseball season.
