Insurance rate Boxter vs. E350
ok, the wife traded her Boxter for an E350.
MSRPs are similar. However the insurance rate for the E went up by $250 per year. According to my agent its because Mercedes parts are much more expensive and Porsche shares a lot of their parts with VW.
I sincerely doubt his arguments. If anything Porsche parts would be more.
Maybe they share some components between the Touareg and Cayenne but that's about it.
What do you guys think?

I added the M-B versus trade, but in comparative quotes, the M-B is over 35% higher than my Porsche is to insure. This is, in part, due to rates based upon locale as the Porsche is in IL and the M-B in CA. In addition, my wife has a Cayenne, and her car is less than either of mine to insure as well.

Insurance is such a complicated game depending on many variables. $250 doesn't sound like a big difference to me (you don't mention what % this is of your premium). The agent might be right. Or maybe it's that your E is simply more recent. Or maybe that females driving Boxsters are statistically much safer drivers than those driving E's.
Funny, my previous car was a 2004 Subaru WRX (NOT STi). My E550 4matic loaded had MSRP more than 10x the Blue book value of the Subaru, and my insurance went up $1 per year. My insurance company didn't even bother to bill me for the difference.

I traded in my 2003 E320 for my current car and my insurance onlt went up $96.00 per year. My collision coverage went down considerably due to the increased safety features and responses to crash situations. I first thought it would go up at least $200 to $400 per year but pleasantly surprised it so little.

I'm a farmers insurance agent in California and my 2011 e350 was the same as my srt-8 superbee that has 575 hp! And about 300 more than my prius but that's because we have a hybrid discount. Rates are not the dame in every state nor person. Your age occupation driving record miles driven and limits all impact the rate. Also if a car retains it's value better longer the rates are higher due to the cost to replace if the car was a total loss. Also parts do cost more a cls 550 hid light is 1700 where a Toyota Avalon is about 560.
Also it is hard to even compare rates from other companies because of the policy limitations and restrictions. Example farmers in California will pay you the replacement cost of your car in the event it is a total loss. Another big name company pays blue book and low blue book. That is not something 800 sales people tell you but that can be tens of thousands of dollars for a well equipped MB.
I can answer questions but only for California residents per state laws.

I've noticed my windshield is getting that "used" look, and I was so happy when it was new, in that it seemed so perfect and virginal. That didn't last long.
In 5800 Miles, I'd say about 4+K of it is Highway, but I'm still surprised to find a little pit or two there.
Windshields will get used and abused, and grilles as well (my grille seems to be a magnet for debris. Fortunately, the E has a big chrome face which is a much better shield than a painted face that would have to be repainted). It's something I've just learned to live with. My main concern (out of the two) is the paint staying chip free, or at least, mostly chip free.
