I have never heard of such a tax. Out of curiosity, how much is annual tax and is it reduced as the car depreciates?

That's a form or personal property tax. In Arizona and other states, they whack you when you register the car.

Of course we also have a stiff sales tax here as well.

The value in Arizona is the MSRP which is $57,100 on the E550 I just ordered.

BTW, I used to live in North Carolina years ago and they taxed dogs, pigs, etc.

I live in Massachusetts, one of the tax capitals in the US.
We have excise tax on cars and every year we must pay our towns a tax for our cars.
I just got mine for my C63 and they valued it at the base price of $56k+ for a total tax due of around $1400.
Luckily they don't consider options, my car had an additional $26k in options
They do depreciate the value annually.
I paid over $4000 in sales tax, $1300 on excise and state income tax, property tax, you get the picture Massachusetts.
So far if you factor the miles I have on the car, I paid over $5 in taxes for every mile I drove and that doesn't include gas tax, which my car loves drinking

I get sick every year when my wife and I do our taxes--when you see how much Uncle Sam gets I could get a couple new AMGs every year

We have one tax of 13% called the HST. It is a combination of provincial(state) and federal tax. It's a one time shot and when trading a car, we pay on the difference only.
In the US your income tax is lower but they are more imaginative on many other form of taxes. Needless to say, when our sour sucker politicians discover these innovative taxes, we can expect them in the near future.

Yea I lived there too and I used to call it Taxachusettes too... but then a few years later I move to NJ where if you own a home you pay your taxes as well as the taxes for the people who dont own a home.
Man, I miss Taxachusettes now lol.

Blue Book Value

S.C. uses mid-level Blue Book value and is pretty accurate in setting annual property taxes on vehicles. You pay county and city if you live in a city. Also, school district. Much of school district is cancelled though which is why SC schools rank among lowest in the nation.
Cost about $25 or so for new license each year.
However, the sales tax on any vehicle (car, boat, plane) is $300 maximum and we have probably lowest gasoline tax in nation.
Most US citizens don't realize that overall, we pay the lowest taxes of any industrialized nation-Asian, European, American. BTW, people who rent property pay higher property taxes than people who own their homes. The landlords pass the higher tax on to the renters.

In addition, we are taxed $77 a year in Ontario. There are no direct city taxes, Toronto - I think- had a tax but it was eliminated.

Oh, you'd cry if I told you about state business regs, fees, multiple licenses, etc. Let's just say the state is not pro biz at all and they keep coming up with new taxes form everything imaginable and call them fees and licenses.
You'd think our streets are paved in gold and our schools all have Harvard professors teaching, quite the opposite.
The more you feed government, the worse it gets in doing it's job, IMO--but I digress
MA was also the first state with the mandatory health care system, very similar ton the one the Feds adopted--it never stops, I actually consider leaving the state often. Don't even get me started on gun laws

To stay on topic, my great state also mandates annual inspections for every vehicle and charge a fee for this.
Even brand new vehicles need an inspection within 10 days of purchase.

Such is the balance of society in general. A very wise man once said:

'A government that is big enough to give you everything you want, is also big enough to take away everything you have.'

That wise man was Thomas Jefferson. History should be studied as it tends to repast itself if we do not learn from our previous mistakes....

Jefferson was a great man and a true patriot--very true about history repeating itself.

A few recent documentaries to check out are Collapse, The End of America(liberal slant, but very informative) and the Frontline:The Warning.
Check these out if you haven't already, very alarmist in some ways and I take everything with a grain of salt, but facts are facts.
If you're someone who likes to be clueless and live in bliss, you won't want to see these films, but if you like to live with your eyes open, do yourself a favor and watch these film.
Personally, I'd rather be informed and prepared if and when the $h!t hits the fan.

'I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.'--Thomas Jefferson.
We're about $14 Trillion too late!

Another great quote from Jefferson is: 'Every generation needs a new revolution.'
Unfortunately, I don't think Jefferson could have imagined how big and powerful a government could be--we could only hope to be able to pull off a revolution here.
In my opinion, the only thing scarier than a dictatorship is one disguised as a democracy, at least the people of Egypt (insert your own dictatorship) know what they were fighting against.
So many people here are uninformed and live life thinking Uncle Sam is their friend doing right by them--it could be worse for sure, but it can be much better too!
Off the soap box now--I think I have some taxes to pay

I have seen a few minutes of "Collapse, the End of America" and need to watch the rest. The other I haven't heard of but will look it up. Off to SoCal this week so will see if I can rip to my IPad for inflight entertainment. Thanks for the tip.

I also need to refresh myself on Jefferson a bit as it has been a while since I've read much on him. Great man / leader.
