0-60 times are only meaningful in p*ssing contests. What matters most in real world driving are 30 to 70 and 40 to 80 times or how much you have to shift down on long grades.

+1 I would also add 0-45 or 0-50 as a more important stat for real world driving.

Road and Track used to have 0 to ? times along with those passing times I posted. I don't know if they still do.

I replaced my 2008 E350 with a 2011 E550 and I doubt I've ever exceeded 3,000 RPM since I had it. Where I expect to see a big improvement is on long mountain grades and passing on two lane roads.

I also enjoy the smoothness of that big V8. What I don't like is that if you let up on the gas it doesn't slow down very fast compared to the 350 with the 3.10 rear end.

A wise MB tuner once told me these cars come from Germany with the "avg" driver in mind,,except for the amg versions and a few others. He's right, because the limits of the engines are untapped by most owners. A chip here and an exhaust system there,,and a apir of K n N's and you'll be suprised how much money you can save and the HP boost wont hurt either.
Just my $.02,,
I think the only time the standard production E's ride on rails is when they are in transport from the shipyard to the regional depot yard, awaiting truck transport to their respective dealers.

Im not racing my E...I just like to keep my low end torque when I need it....using the K&N type filter is not an option for me...I've learned enough from past experience. For those who like them...cool.

I agree...i wiped alot of oily dirt from the inside of my air intake pipe....it doesn't do the greatest job of trapping dirt like that of the paper filter.

Smog Check?

But if you do go with the K&N filter, don't oil it too much....your mass air flow sensor will be gunked up and may throw a check engine light (CEL), or the throttle body "butterfly" will be sticky.

Pete
The other downside with K&N is failing the smog test which happened to me.
Have been using them on many of my cars over 10+ years, but realized it's not worth time and money and am back to stock air filters now...

I agree stock filters can be had cheap too, I change mine on all my cars every 5k, throttle bodies (on the outside look clean, very little carbon.

I've had K&N in my CLK55 AMG for over 30,000 miles. They work great and the throttle response and hwy power are improved.

I had a CA smog check with them on and I passed. No problems with MAF sensors or anything like that.
