Which cars before taking the plunge?
What cars did everyone look at before choosing their E?
Before I took the plunge into purchasing the E550 I looked at the BMW 5, Lexus GS, Volvo S60 and S80, C63, and the M3.
I chose the E550 due to needing a comfortable 5 passenger car and the high safety rating as well as its fresh design sold it for me. The V8 helped also. Also, the wifey complained about how harsh the ride was in my previous SLK 350, which I do miss because it was very tossable in corners and the exhaust note from 0-20 mph was subtly awesome.

Given my need for a larger back seat than the one my 335d featured and my insistence on staying diesel the only choice I had was the Bluetec.Having heard rumors of a diesel 5 Series coming to the US I was waiting for that but chose to wait no longer. If it had been officially announced I almost certainly would have gone with it rather than the Bluetec.I also heard rumors of a diesel Panamera and a diesel Jaguar coming here but nothing ever materialized.

S class, I thought it too flamboyant for my tastes, not to mention too much more $ for too little extra. C class, I was impressed but it didn't have some features that I wanted. ClS - I traded a 2006 CLS ( and had loved every minute of the six years that I had it.) E-550 - I didn't see the point of the extra power - no matter how much power you have, the speed limit is the same for everyone - not to mention the "gunslinger effect" no matter how fast you are, there is always someone faster. Cadillac - too cheesy. BMW, wasn't impressed. Jaguar - was impressed, but don't particularly like the new style sedan and still concerned about their reputation. Even looked at Lexus, and Infiniti; but once you've had a car like the CLS - it's hard to leave the marque...just needed a sedan not a go fassssst.

2012 CLS63
I only drove a CLS.............
I suppose I would have prefurrd a Jaguar, but I REALLY
don't like the appearance of them.....
I wanted a V8......and that narrowed it down quite a bit right there.....
Mercedes just kind of seemed like a good choice....
I drove an E class and just decided it was good for me.....
coming from a 2001 s40 I would have been pretty happy in a lot of things.....
but my brain kept thinking of Mercedes Benz...hehe

BMW X5 - redesign too soon around the corner
BMW X6 - expensive but would definitely get it if I lived somewhere it snows
RR Sport - maybe to replace the ML next year
Porsche Cayenne - too expensive, do not like the redesign
MB C63 - too raw for daily driver and small with 2 kids
BMW M3 Coupe - expensive, would need to find a used one but not many on the used market, still my want this car very badly
BMW 535i - not yet readily available
Lexus GS460 - design is too old but good value
Jaguar XF - not 50 yet or even 40
Audi A6 - too bland, although new A6 looks to be pretty good, see Edmunds road test

E350 4Matic 2011
I test drove a 535xi which I wanted to buy as a change since I previously had an older E class. The 535xi reported an X-drive malfunction during the test drive with the sales person. I went back to the E350 which I'm very happy with

M37x (prob the most comfortable driver chair i ever sat in)
A6 (really?)
CTS (everyone has one in NYC)
My E-Class is definitely a head turner far above all the above. and is my 3rd one, w124,w211,w212.
