Wheel Locks

When going in for service is it necessary to bring your wheel lock lug so the dealer can remove the locks if taking wheels off?

why don't you simply call the dealer and ask for the parts department

I always do. I leave mine in the center console in case I have a puncture.

THe dealer cannot be expected to have a zillion lock lugs lying around. The lugs/locks/keys for the G and CL wheels are different, otherwise they would not be locks!

I always take the locking lugs off to protect them.

The locking lugs are designed to be applied by hand, not by impact wrench.

The dealer/service always uses an impact wrench, which over time can strip the locking lugs.

I have also had them lose one of the locking lugs before, which cost me $$$ to replace.

I just replace with regular lugs for service, just in case!

Not exactly true - the dealers all have a master set of lock "keys" that they are issued for the preferred brand of wheel locks sold/recommended for MB vehicles. However, the due to use of impact wrenches and/or misplacement by the mechanic, those sets are often no longer complete and they may no longer have the required key. The McGard set that Lexus used had approximately 12 keys in it - mainly keyed by color code. The postcard you get in the owners info for registration will list a # and color code - the number equates to a customer id number and manuf/model year(s) used and the color will indicate the master key to be used by the dealer.

So technically - no they don't have a zillion different combos...just like Master lock 3 number combo locks only have a finite # of combos...and they are all based on the starting number - if you know the starting or ending number you can derive the combo, and if you start with the ending number and work in reverse l-r-l vs r-l-r you should be able to open the lock also.

This makes sense. Thanks

I could have called the dealer but that would defeat the purpose of this forum, exchanging information, ideas and thoughts. As you can see others were curious about this as well.

no doubt, the salesmen know very little from the dealing I've had, but it's in the shop where I really like to listen to whats going on....
those cats know all kinds of good stuff.....and they'll talk too.....
I have had better conversations with the techs than most people there at the dealer....nice cars, crappy customers, crappy customer stories....etc....
it's awesome.....

Funny you say this. I took my car in today due to a knocking noise I'm getting on the right side when going over bumps, a slight shimmy in the steering and brake noise. I went for a ride with the shop Forman. He showed me a feature of the car that I was not aware of, brake hold. When driving and applying the brakes when you come to a stop if you press the brake pedal downward it puts the brake on hold, an indicator shows on the dashboard. At this point you can lift your foot off the brake. This is good when stuck in traffic. I was not aware of this and had I not road with the shop Forman I probably would not have ever known.
