I'm trying to understand what is a unique identifier of the comand 4.5 system...
SD card is only unique identifier if it is not open, and you see globe on upper right

Here is MB WIS document explanation

The vehicle data card documents the New Telematics Generation 4.5 with the aid of an additional control code 088.
COMAND Online NTG 4.5 will be visually recognizable on the SD card slot (1) in the head unit (code 512, 527).

COMAND code 512/527 and control code 088 --> NTG 4.5

Can't recall for sure but I'm almost certain that I don't have Sirius Weather.I do,however, have Sirius Traffic.

I have a larger slot that accepts a PCMIA adapter *into which* you can insert an SD,MS,CF,etc (depending on the adapter's capabilities)

Then you have the older version and you won't have Sirius traffic.

I have Sirius Weather. It wasn't activated by dealer when I bought the car, so I took it back and they activated it. It worked. Yesterday, I took it in to fix some light bulbs and when I got it back, it didn't work. What happened? Any ideas? Dealer said they didn't touch it... ALL I get is a ESN number and a "please call this number to activate". Sirius is not helpful. I took it to another dealer. they claimed they couldn't do anything :/

You should be able to call that number, give them your radio id (channel 0) and they should be able to tell you what is supposed to be active....or they can help by reactivating it.

Likely the dealer disconnected the battery for some reason...and the radio lost it's activation.

Thanks ghstudio for all your help and feedback. I called Sirius yesterday, but they said the ESN number doesn't exist...I asked them how I am getting radio and traffic and they said it came from my dealer

I just remembered....Sirius just ran a "try it you'll like it" for a couple of weeks where they opened up Sirius to everyone...you actually didn't need any subscription. They hoped that you would like it enough to subscribe. That just ended.

It certainly sounds like your dealer never activated the official trial....

Nice thread, thanks. Do you know how to enter the engineering mode of COMAND system? And is there a way to change the temperature unit from F to C? Thanks a lot.

The display in front of the driver can be changed from F to C just by using the buttons on the steering wheel. I'm not exactly sure where I saw it but it's easily reachable. You don't need any special codes.

Hi ghstudio, Thanks for the reply. I searched the menu over and over again and still can't find the option. I can find the unit changing option for speedometer and odometer but can't find the one for temperature. So I began to think that the engineering mode might help. I found many ways to enter the E mode. like "ok + hang up" or "1+#+hang up". None working. Is w216 different from others?

Some easy to spot physical differences with comand 4.5:

1) if you change the ventilation temperature, they show at the bottom of the comand display
2) the slot in the center of the dash is now for an SD card (significantly smaller) and offset a little to the left
3) There is a globe at the far right at the top of the display that gives you the option to see sirius weather (for US cars)...(sadly, much more function for European cars)

It has been reported that there are a few cars with the 2012 (more colorful) dashboard that still had comand 4.0...so that may not be a reliable indicator...however all cars with comand 4.5 have the new dashboard
my new car is a June production model and it has the color screen inside the speedo, but the COMAND is still the previous version with the wider PCMIA slot

It probably depends on when they started running out of parts on the line. then they started using the newer versions.
My build was March and got neither of the new options.

I just found this one today ... with Comand 4.0: If you press the telephone answer button "green button" on the dash a list of recent calls will appear. If you press the telephone answer button on the steering wheel, nothing happens.

Actually - if you press the answer button on the steering wheel while phone is selected in the speedo display the list appears

Just to add to this thread there was actually actually 3 versions of ntg 4.0 and one version of 4.5 for 2011.

The initial one in early 2011 were the same as 2010 4.0. Around late 2010 the cars came through ntg 4.0 with bluetooth audio and the climate controls display on the command screen. Then they came out with ntg 4.0 color gauge cluster but same command which were mostly June and July productions. The last two decades of July and august production cars had ntg 4.5. In addition to the identifers mentioned you will have the media interface mounted in the center console vs the glove box. I am dissapointed because my current 2011 e has the color gauges but no 4.5, hence early july production.

What is Mercedes policy on upgrading the comand system software to the latest that will work on the hardware? I'm not asking about the maps....I'm asking about getting the comand software updated.

you cannot upgrade to 4.5 because it is hardware related, the text messaging upgrade you can do yourself but there is a cost. I can get the exact info tomorrow. I was thinking of doing it on my car. There is a website where you can dowload the update to usp and then you have to purchase cable to transfer from usb to command.

I will be taking ownership of my first MB 2011 E350 Sport this Saturday. After reading this thread I wanted to find out what Command version my vehicle had. I was able to find the details off the Vin. My vehicle build was in August and here's an image of the console schematic.

Great info...please follow up with more if you can.I assume "usp" is a typo and you meant USB.
