C250
I bought a 2012 C250 with turbo 2 weeks ago. Noticed a "puttering" noise a few days ago, especially at idle. Felt a vibration in the pedal too. I brought it to the dealership yesterday and went for a test ride with an expert mech. He heard the noise but didn't feel the vibration. He talked about the engine idling rough in cold weather but also said it may have something to do with the engine brackets. He said that he wasn't too familiar with the new line but spoke of past problems with the brackets. He also said that Mercedes may do a recall if enough complaints are made. He told me I would have to basically live with it. It doesn't affect performance but it is disturbing. Seems that the puttering has gotten louder.
I'm a newbie to Mercedes. Is it your opinion that the puttering noises I'm describing are par for the course for Mercedes?

My car and the one I test drove all sound the same (like a Diesel) it's normal for the new design I still love my car! You can't hear the engine from the inside so I really don't mind since it's a Turbo and gets 31mpg's it's a nice trade off I guess

I also test drove another vehicle while getting mine inspected for the vibrations and puttering. The test vehicle also made a puttering noise but not as loud, and there were no vibrations.

Glad you got to drive one.
Was the trans. in E or S mode when you test drove it?
For me, my coupe in E mode, which starts out in second gear, accelerates extremely smoothly - sometimes a little too leisurely, especially if stopped on the upside of a significant grade not conducive to starting out in second gear. In S mode, in which you're starting out in first gear, I definitely agree with you about the "cool" factor! As I'm sure you know, all of this gets even better as you put some miles on the engine and the trans. learns what your expectations are (adaptive feature).
Agreed also on the MPG. It is utterly amazing to me that I'm getting 1-2 mpg more in local driving and up to 3-4 mpg more on the highway, as compared to the smaller, lighter CLK320 I traded, with its 215hp V6. And with all that extra performance as a bonus.
I'll say it again, my car is dead silent inside except for a mild acceleration drone (more "cool"?). I can't imagine any driver being bugged by the sounds from the new D.I. V6, unless perhaps one manages to drive it strapped to the hood! But that's just me.

In a quiet environment.....
Listening to the car on the outside, there's (1) the usual ticking noise.
Sitting inside the car, stationary, dead silent.
On acceleration, especially on slow quiet roads, I can hear a (2) mild acceleration drone.

The 2012 E350's engine was clearly louder on acceleration & heard the "engine droning" on acceleration.
The 2011 E350 made as much noise as any older Mercedes. I drove a 2005 E500 for a bit. Quiter for sure. The "engine droning" was still there but very very very faintly.

Noisy engine ticking noise
I purchased a 2014 C300 4matic about 5 months ago with 14,000 mi. and I'm not sure if I just didn't notice the noise when I picked it up but as time went on I noticed a ticking noise from the engine compartment. So the first thing I did was bring it to the MB dealer and let the 'SHPOP FORMAN' listen to it. Well he said it was the direct injection and it was just noisy. So as time went on I felt like it got louder and again went back to the dealer and got no answers...again. Now it's to the point I'm embarrassed, everyone that hears it says "wow your car is noisy". So, once again I bring it back to the mb dealer for the third time and tell them I can't take the noise anymore and something has to be done. Well I let the one service guy listen to it and he even said wow it really sounds loud. So what he did was look up somewhere on his computer and found out that there was a bulletin sent out on this noise a while ago! Finally it turns out the was an issue with the high pressure fuel pump wearing out and making noise. So they worked on the car for about a day and a half and Now the car is super quiet! And the car still has the DIRECT INJECTION! What a surprise! I just don't think these dealers want to take the time and take apart all of these cars to with this same problem that had the bulliten out about them. Sorry this is so long but I want anybody that has this same problem to know about this issue with the high pressure fuel pump. NO MORE EMBARRASSMENT!

Hi guys I'm new here.I discovered a treatment that worked for me, for my 2010 e63 sedan, pertaining to lifter ticking noises. My mechanic used Sea-foam in a hot engine, Idled for 45 mins to 1 hour. Oil drained and refilled with full syn 5w -40 and installed z-max micro lubricant additive, in the gas and oil. There is one for each. ( The only engine additive approved by the FAA for airplane engines.) My car has 98,300 and now the engine is whisper quiet and running temps are down. The oil passages for the lifters are tiny, with any build up of oil tarnish or dirt build up, these can become blocked or narrowed. This reduces oil from entering the lifter quickly. This causes the tapping on the cam. Not Normal Not good for your car. Try this fix..
Thanks,
Jeff
