This!!!
Main reason I only use my in dash navigation. My phone is quite old now (Galaxy 3) and I'm lucky if I can go an hour with out the yellow low battery symbol coming up. The navi seems to be very accurate and I've never updated it. I did receive the e-mail as well but for 200 plus bucks they can keep that lol.
FYI- I do use Waze but only for alerts on hidden police or traffic but it's rare that I use it.

The maps were upgraded when I purchased the car CPO almost 2 years ago. Using the built in navigation is always my first choice because it's more convenient than using a phone. A phone is handy when the address isn't recognized by the nav system. I was surprised to see that the map version is already 4 updates behind... version 11 to version 15. So I went ahead and purchased the update.
I would too....I'm not paying 250 for it....and the last thing I need is for someone to remind me that "IF" i did do it...I would be in violation. Has anyone here ever copied music they bought to a cd or thumb drive, then loaned that cd or thumb drive to a friend?

I just purchased and updated my nav on a 2010 e350 coupe. It was $250 plus tax and had a glitch between uploading the 1st and 2nd disc [see post on coupe section] which the dealer rectified quickly once they had the car. As i had recently bought the car I didn't know how old the nav was in it or could I find any way of discovering the edition. i figured it had never been updated and the one I got just came out [June 2016] so I figured it was worth doing.
The install was easy. Insert disc one, when it's finished insert disc two. What they don't tell you is it takes almost 3 hours! The disc also contains a Gracenote update.

Gracenotes is the world’s leading entertainment data and technology company. In a nutshell... they are the people that make sure the Command system knows the Album you insert, the Artist, and the Song Titles so the correct info is displayed on the screen.
I have a 2014 E class. They just released the GPS map update, version 15. This update comes in a box which contains a flash drive. The drive is plugged into the center arm rest USB port for downloading. The update then asks for a 6 digit code to be entered on my nav unit to allow the download. The dealer says they cannot provide this code to me and that I must bring the car in for service and the shop has to do the update? What experience have others had and what kind of costs are expected? Seems to be a rather involved and potentially costly process for a map update.

I think $520 is a bit too pricey, I was willing to pay in the $200 to $300 range.

The biggest upside to Waze is the end user's ability to keep things current. People earn "points" by adding input and have the ability to actually edit the maps. Your seniority/ranking allows/effects the amount of input you have. I have found this a invaluable in my routing. With road closures being very common in Minnesota it's a huge time saver. Is it perfect? No. It is however far better than any of the alternatives. The police reported warnings (user citings) are a huge bonus to help avoid potential speeding tickets when the flow of traffic is above the posted limit. Road hazard warnings for debris and potholes, etc. I have been saved on multiple fronts more times than I can count.
There are more pop ups in the app now that Google bought it. I agree it is an irritation, however I use the app 90% of the time when I am driving. I have a pro clip mount that is in a great location over the passenger area's knee and just below/right of the dash nav display. I plug my phone in when I get into my car and launch it up.

Well - I am sure you have a mobile phone with Google maps. Tell it where you want to go and it takes you on the fastest route! I have a 2010 E550 and the navigation system is not only outdated but a PITA to program, in addition to the fact that you can only do it while standing still (never mind if the passenger is the one entering the destination). So in my opinion, without traffic information, the older nav system is not worth updating to the latest routes
isnt there some BIG hearted person that could just share a ISO file or a Torrent for us simple ppl to download it. i would do it if i had a cd , after seeing all this demand on the update.
but i guess its 'illegal" or some kind of crap.
(did that on my acura and bimmer before)

It's a little murky. I think at one point all you needed was the original DVD, copies wouldn't work. So you could update the navigation and sell the DVD. But then at some point you also need a pin code to activate the DVD so you couldn't sell the old one because you'd still need a pin code to activate it. Not sure if an older DVD would still work without a pin code now or when that took place.

I believe you need to put in the pin code in order for it to work on the new one. At one point they sold the DVD that didn't require a pin code. If you were able to install it without a pin code then it should continue to work.
