extended warranty

I am curious if others have thought about or purchased the extended warranty from MB. I didnt buy it when I bought the car but will run out of miles on my '10 E550 warranty in about a year. For 3 grand to take me to 100k miles seems relatively worth it considering what repair costs can be. I will probably keep the car that long.

I purchased it for my 2010 E350. With all of the changes in the 2010 model, plus all of the electronics packed in, I thought it prudent to cover everything out to 100K. I'm planning on keeping this car that long and if it hasn't broken by then ...

Is that for one or two additional years?

If I decide to keep a car I purchase the extended warranty just before the original expires. That way if the car was stolen or a total loss I don't own a warranty that maybe transferable only if I buy another MB. When you purchase the auto the F & I guy, who earns his money for selling tire and wheel warranties, insurance, extended warranties and in darker times "paint protectors", "rustproofing" etc. always cautions that the extended warranty will cost more later. It will but why pay for something now you do not need for 4 years or 48K later. What if you hate the car?

On other vehicles I have price shopped the warranty with other dealers. I do not know if MB allows the dealers to discount the extended warranty. Usually there are different mileage and time based packages.

Always buy only the manufacturer's warranty not an after market one.

I am not sure about MB, but, other mfg. extended warranties I have had provided a prorated refund on the unused portion of the warranty with the transfer of ownership.

Thanks for all the replies- very useful. I like the suggestion to wait till close to when the original warranty runs out. I also agree with the point on all the electronics crammed into this thing. Frankly my biggest worry is the airmatic system which ive read some horror stlries about. Further- i drive this car into nyc everyday so it gets rattled around quite a bit!

I skipped the extended warranty too, and figured I could get it when I need too......
part of my reasoning was to stick it to the guy trying to sell it to me......
he was pushing me like a bat out of hell to buy it........and it was actually kind of obnoxious the way he was trying to sell it.......
so I said to please leave me alone to sign these papers.....LOL.......
the folks at the dealer know I'm not going to be badgered.........haha

but I do plan on getting some kind of extended warranty

I purchased the extended warranty when I bought the car. The salesman wasn't the normal high pressure aftermarket crap that you normally have to deal with. That being said on of the main reasons I bought it was it was totally refundable if I got rid of the car before the main warranty was up. Yes MB is holding my money, but unlike any other insurance policy I can get my money back if I don't use it. The airmatic suspension alone is worth the cost if something goes wrong with it.

they have a sliding schedule where you can take it out as far as 7 total years and 125k miles. This costs over 5k for the E. Going 5 years and 100k miles is about 3k. there are also intermediate steps like 5 years and 75k miles and 6 years and 100k miles etc.
