No you don't have to drill the cover. There is another way. You can notch the cover on the inside. When you take it off you will see what I mean. Then run the wires through it and replace the dust cover. It will be a little hard to get it on, but it will make the install a little cleaner imo. Yes the drivers side is a pain in the a$$ to install. Best to do it through the wheel well.

When you look at the inside of the dust cap you will see what I mean. The place where I bought my HIDs told me to install it like this. I just trimmed a 3/4" notch in it. The I ran the wires out from the notch. The wires are compressed between the cap and the housing. It was a little hard to get the cap closed, but it goes and it does not chaff the wires. This also allows you to put back the halogens if you trade in/return lease without any hassles or holes in the cap. I don't have any pictures right now.

I did it this way on my wifey's GLK350...you don't see the wires behind the headlights when looking under the hood...

Each car is different...but for the w212, it depends on the size of your ballasts. If they are slim ballasts, then i suggest mounting it with 3M tape underneath the headlight unit....there is space there, then just zip tie the wires down. If regular sized ballasts, then probably somewhere between the fender and the frame.

Just FYI...I did 3 HID installs in 3 weekends (1 per weekend)....on a w203, x204, and w212. Each vehicle is similar, but there are slight differences esp how the bulb in secured to the housing.

Yes, makes it alot easier if the wheel is off.

aqsc815616 the rest of the information that PHLM is good. That is what I did and he answered all the questions. I did mine with the wheel on. It would be easier to remove the wheel, it just makes removing the front wheel well liner and everything else easier. Good luck with the install. Best mod I've done so far.

captj3, did you remove the wheel well liner with the wheel still on? Were you able to save the washer/rivet things which hold in the liner?
Also, for notching the cap, I still don't get it. Did you cut the side of the dust cap to let the wires go down? I can't see it very well in the picture
Thanks

you have to remove the wheel liner and w/wheel off is easier to get access to the bulb. i'm sure phml can answer every single of your question "professionally".

As for notching that captj3 mentioned...that's probably at the edge of the opening.
I drilled a hole...then used a mini hacksaw and cut a slit to the hole...then bent the slits and slid the wires to the hole.

i remember i've seen some but forgot which forum. have you searched other forums as well? anyway, if you have two sets and if you are one handyman like phml, why not try the 55w first if you like it that much. change it out to 35w if there is any problems down the road.

I did with the wheel on. It would have been a little faster and easier with the wheel off. As for notching the cap, if you take the right side off and look at it you will see the inside ring that I am talking about. I cut a 3/4' wide gap to have enough room to lay the wires flat when reinstalling the cap. Things have been a bit hectic lately here. If I can I will try to take a picture, but no promises.
