It has too lines of LED dots, one above of navigation screen and another one above of back seats. Watch corresponding line when you go forward or back. (back line will be visible in mirror too). When you’re approaching obstacles just watch for dots. Than more dots get lighted on side of an obstacle than you close to the obstacle. Red dots are certain warning do not go any close. Park assist has to be activated (I guess a button with P on center console). Curb will be invisible for park assist in most times.

Well, that's not really Park Assist. Park Assist gives you instructions in COMAND as to where a "parkable" space is, and then how to get into it, one step at a time, even how far, which direction to turn the wheel.

As to how it works, read up in the manual.

Hey, this is from MB USA site how it works :

PARKTRONIC with Parking Guidance

Parking Guidance helps you size up parallel-parking spaces as you drive by, using sensors in the bumper to determine if available spots can accommodate your vehicle. It then displays steering instructions to help you find your way into it.

During any low-speed maneuver, PARKTRONIC's ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumpers detect nearby objects within the system's field of view. Audible signals and illuminated displays in the cabin help you navigate tight spaces with confidence.

At least one of the RTFM folks above doesn't even have it on his car. It's trickier than the FM implies. Here is a thread with details when I figured it out.
