teach me -light question

I know that this button turns on my L shaped "fog lights" .I'm not sure how functional they are but I like the the way they look while they are on.

Since I leave the lights on auto all the time do I have to manually turn these on when I want them much like the c/s button?

I will say that even after re-reading the manual several times I'm amazed at how unclear this section is. (To me anyway).

On/off/auto would have been enough but we have on 1/on 2/off/auto/adaptive/fog geez!

Now I'm confused. That button is definitely to turn off the dtr lights(pucks). If you turn far left the toggle, the last two are for parking left or parking right if your broken down on either side of the highway. The setting next to the P is for parking lights, so all lights on except the headlights. I think??? I just leave mine on auto with the pucks on,,,,done.

Manual says it is for rear dogs. I think.
But functionally at least at 530am the only thing it did was turn on/off the Lower lights that I always assumed were the DTR lights. When I press it I get orange fog lamp on dash.

I always leave it on auto too but noticed that those lights are not on with rest of the lights unless I push that button.

The OP highlighted the button to the left of the master light switch. Hyperion is correct. That button turns the rear fog light on and off. For those not familiar with that light, it is a very bright light built into the left rear tail light assembly for use in fog and other poor visibility conditions.

In the US it is simply a nice extra safety convenience. In Europe it is mandatory to be used in foggy conditions. Your car (if European spec) would not even pass the TUV inspection if it didn't work. I say this due to my 14 years of driving experience in Germany while serving in the USAF.

Except that in auto the only thing it did was turn on those lower lights in the front.
Picture me manual in hand in the dark pushing buttons and running around looking. Pretty funny actually.

I'll check again but I looked specifically for that but nothing. Wonder if it needs to be set on the farthest right setting which is foglamps for that to work?

At night do the DTR lights not also come on? It looked as if they only came on with the press of that button. At least in auto mode anyway.

Just like the look of them being on basically all the time but couldn't figure it out. So I asked here.

What you have highlighted are the fog lights.

The 1/2 on 1/2 off are you parking lights. Turn the switch to that mode and push your indicator down or up to light up the left or right side lights on the car. Very useful when parking on dark streets.

The rest are pretty self explanatory but here is the manual for them:
http://www4.mercedes-benz.com/manual...ual_base.shtml

You want to be looking under the "Lights" section.

Mine look like those in your sig.
Maybe in auto mode pushing that turns the lights to full from 10%
Maybe I didn't appreciate the10% illumination.

I will look again but I do know that nothing illuminated on the rear .

I think p1 and p2 packages have different arrangement/functions for the lights. In auto, that button that you circled only turns on and off my hockey stick led's(I have p2). The rear fog lights are obviously used for foggy situations, but are also used that you can turn on either right side rear, or left side in case you were broken down on that particular side of the road. My w211 was so much easier.

I guess the NV option changes it around more because the only thing that button does in my car(to my knowledge) is turn on the rear fog on the left.....do we have one on the right too??

Hype, what year is your 550? Maybe that button just turns the dlr on/off during the day, and is a multifuctional that is used for the rear fog at night when the dlr dim and the headlights are on?? I actually never tried to hit that button at night,, now I'm curious.

Yep. Same here. (Also p2).
I did get one rear fog to come on but they seem to alternate function with the front DTRLs.
Never got both working. But who cares. i did see the dimmer version of the DTRLs when auto actually kicked in briefly (was overcast/raining).

So it is still sort of a mystery. The rear fog button under some circumstances turns on the rear fogs but also controls the front DTRLs when in auto. For me only the left rear fog ever came on (dead bulb?). Front DTRLs did not consistently come on with the headlights after multiple pushes on the rear fog button.

First time I tried them after turning on the car DTRLs were dimmed but I hit the button above and they came on full bright. After that they seemed detached from subsequent pushes . Really on odd setup.

Sorry, the fog is only on left. I meant the parking lights switching from left to right.

That button is also useful if you want the dash lights to go on when the dash is difficult to read due to lighting conditions. Obviously not the intended purpose, but it does work.....

The rear foglight button does the same thing on mine also; only turns on the left-rear foglight. And no; the right-side is not mean to light up only the left-side.

That is a cool little trick. It basically turns the lights on regardless of ambient light.

Why only one side?

That and also European law only requires to light up the left side because it is illegal to pass on the right.

Incorrect. The single rear fog is to identify the driver's side of the car (left for LHD and right for RHD)

Remember that contrary to the US (where people love to turn on the fogs in clear weather) European law requires the rear fog to be used when visibility is under 50 meters (@50 yards) and a ticket is issued if the fog light is used in better visibility. Since the fog is intended to be used when the other lights aren't visible, the single fog identifies the driver's side of the car.
