There are two types of insurance covering your car - the mandatory collision and the optional comprehensive. The comprehensive is not optional if you lease or have a loan.
Collision protects you financially for things that are in your control like you running into somebody or something. This portion also pays claims for the damage you caused to others. Claims under this affect your future insurance costs.
Comprehensive protects you from things that aren't your fault - fire, theft, vandalism and most non-moving claims in addition to wildlife damage and glass breakage. Claims here do not affect future rates.
Each type has its own deductible. A low deductible for collision is expensive making sense to have a $1000 or so deductible. Comprehensive has cheap lower deductible so it makes sense to consider going to a low deductible. In my case, the difference between a $1000 deductible and a $100 deductible is about $26 every half year or about $52 a year.
A new windshield is $600 or about 12 years of deductibles. If I need a new windshield because of a rock chip every eleven years then I'm ahead of the game.
The same would hold true for that mirror glass.

I wonder if this pop-off ability is a big engineering error by Daimler --- should require a special tool or something. Once the word gets out to the bad guys, everybody will be getting ripped off and then buying their own mirrors back on Craigslist!!!

It does sound like your local dealer is charging for an entire new mirror assembly (also available on european EBAY's) rather than just the replacement mirror. Perhaps Mercedes doesn't sell just the mirror itself in the US, or perhaps your dealer just doesn't bother reading parts diagrams.

My bet is that the dealer looked up the wrong part. It will probably still be cheaper ordered from France or Germany directly, but it's probably available in the US if you just order the mirror, which is all you said you needed, and not the entire mirror assembly.
Me? I just turned the mirror to the side and popped it out without removing the cover. I replaced my US flat mirrors with European-spec (aspherical?) mirrors for ~$100. They're "used," but were in pristine condition. Here's the thread where I posted my experience and another for the seller on fleabay. I'm very happy.
