I think the E-Class is a superior car of this class, namely in styling aesthetics to the 5-Series, however based on what it seems like you want, the 535i I bet will walk the line best in this segment for you. Still, take an E out for a drive in pure Auto mode, forget the paddles as they're not there for sporting purposes, for the hell of it. I think that the 535i M-Sport (like I recommended before) will probably be most suitable for you though, and it's a very well done car.
I find the 535i is the right balance for the 5-series. It's already pig heavy, huge and soft for a BMW traditionalist. The 550, with its 4500 lb, 400 HP and TT V8 just isn't the "BMW" that I seek. Heavy, gluttonous, and not that efficient form of squeezing out performance and HP out of minimalist motors and balanced chassis' that BMW does extremely well.

I did note that the 550 is a pig especially when it comes to fuel consumption, 15city-20hwy. The 535 is a good compromise between speed, luxe, and fuel efficiency.

Buy a house first...by the time that's all done your tastes for a car may change anyway...

Not to mention BMW's irrational obsession with RunFlat tires, resulting in threads like this:

Anyway, not sure why this thread still goes on... like everyone said already - test drive different models, then decide what YOU like the best.

Fuel efficiency with new 5-series comes at a price of other things... If you'll read BMW forums, you'll find many posts complaining about "lightweight" electric power steering (some people find it acceptable, some don't), throttle delay (though supposedly BMW is working on a fix for that), mandatory "engine auto start/stop" system (on 2012+ 528i and 535i models, including xDrive models) which defaults to "enabled" each time you leave the car...

Just one more comment here.
In Germany Mercedes-Benz is a bit more expensive car to buy compared to BMW or Audi of the german cars. You also hear people talk that MB is an old man's car to drive, men with hats drive them...
All this talk points to the one fact: Mb is the best German car. BMW and Audi would want to be but thry are not. This is the only reason why MB can be higher priced in Germany (and Europe) and still sell cars. They are the car and the others are "wannabes".
But we all like what we like...
BTW: If you ever have a chance to visit Stuttgart in Germany go visit the Mercedes-Benz museum right at the MB head quarters (and the biggest MB dealer in the worlkd). In the museum you will learn about auto history that you will not have even a glue of. History what MB can be very proud of. And this is not propaganda, it is facts from history.
Others are followers, period!

There's no such thing as "best car". At least not universally. If there was, we would (or people in Germany would) all drive the same make and same model. Different people buy cars for different reasons - for example, if I only cared about exterior and interior design, I would gladly take new 5-series over E-class without any hesitation (and for some people it's the only thing that matters, so for THEM the new 5-series is "the best German car"). If I only cared about the car's handling in twisty turns on racetrack - I would choose BMW's M3 over MB's C63, and so on. Like you said, "we all like what we like", so no need to turn this thread into flamebait for other brand owners

Update:
I did find a car today that checked all the boxes off my list. It was the BMW 535i w/ M Sport package. It had the right amount of power, it had paddles and the transmission was SPOT ON quick... I drove it the entire time in manual mode w/o a problem.
Of course, there is the 550i M Sport, but I thought this was a tad overkill in power.
I knew the F10 535i would be what you are looking for. I have it and the transmission on it is awesome. Rev-match downshift, ultra smooth upshifts, great execution. Since the car you drove had the paddles I know it had the sport automatic option which supposedly improves shift speed (no one has data on this). In the SPORT mode the acceleration delay that people mentioned is completely gone (at least on my car it is after they did the software update).
I love my F10 but also love the W212 E-class (I have a diesel). They are definitely different cars, but at the end of the day I prefer the BMW. The power delivery, better interior, exterior styling, and comfortable seats are excellent.

Kar don, is the F10 yours and the W212 your other half's, or the other way around? Also, is your F10 an M-Pack? Would love to see a pic of the two cars together.

You started all this...These guy's have never driven a G coupe. I own a Dec 2002 coupe with a SprintBooster. If you don't have a SB get one. There are tons of threads on here about satisfied curtomers. Is my E350 faster than my G35...hell no!!

Or does it also work on my 6mt?
I've never really had an issue with the G37S's speed.... it's the comfort I have an issue with.
Btw, your G35 coupe reminds me of my prior coupe.... I miss that guy.

Wow a lot to read. Entertaining though. Here's my thought take it or leave it. You might want to listen to your wife because I feel that "new physicians" feel they have an image to uphold and first thing out of school they go and get themselves in some deep debt and then they are living paycheck to paycheck and trying to moonlight in other places to pay the bills and live the lifestyle of their colleages who have been in practice for years. Be very smart out of school, focus on your school debts and live modest for a time to make sure your new job is satisfying. You will likely sign a 2 yr contract and if you don't perform, your salary could drop substantially and guess what? You will have to find another job to pay the bills you accrued. Medicine is a tough and competitive field with no guarantees. Anyway it's not that I'm againt you getting a new car, it's the jumping out fresh out of residency into a 60 to 90k car. If your likely to spend that on a car now, what in the world are you likely to spend on other things like a house and such? See where I'm getting at? Just be careful and play it smart. I've seen it happen too many times.

My G will have to serve me well for a few more.
We were not planning on buying a place until I know that I like my new job - it only makes sense to do the same for the car I suppose. I've test driven all the cars that I want to test drive, I've posted and gotten opinions on several car forums and I've made up my mind with as to what car I want.
I will wait a few months to a year - see if I like my new job and then pull the trigger on a 550i w/ M sport.
Thanks all!

I agree... I see the light. I will wait to buy the car and get something I really like.

Really like those wheels. RNBRAD look great with the black. Oh, the benifits of the Fed retirement system. Unlimented benefits until you die. I was just lucky enough not to get killed in Viet Nam. Ok I was a wimp...US Air Force.
