New Mileage

I've owned the car since the first of the year and wifey has been driving to and from work for the first 2000 initial miles.

Finally took the baby on a road trip over the weekend to Boston and Back. I know the engine was rejoicing as it actually got to go above 30 mph (my wife typically drives like an old lady).

Like a young stallion it needs to run to feel good and get all those juices flowing and believe me we were both in our glory on the road today.

I averaged around 70 mph and recorded an average 26 mpg , a bit below what the sticker and most postings on here say.

My question to you fellow 212ers is... Do you think my mpg will improve as the engine wears in or is this just a myth?

My driving style is pretty consistent. I do drive fast but don't accelerate or decrease speed rapidly. In other words I am not wasting any gas. I drive like a gentleman, just a little on the fast side. Your input is welcome and much appreciated. Thanks

I've heard from some M-B owners that the mileage increases as the engine breaks in... One guy told me it didn't "level-off" until he hit about 10K miles. Haven't scrutinized my MPG as of yet...but it seems decent thus far.

Hmm, 26 at 70 sounds like what the 2010-2011's would do (I've gotten higher, and lower at those speeds, depends on wind, conditions, road level, etc.).

26 is normal for me at that speed with an occasional 27 when everything is really perfect. My car has about 19K on it.

On a recent trip, I drove about 380 miles with most of that on the interstate. My car was 2 months old and had about 2,000 miles on the odometer. The trip computer said I a averaged 69.5 mph and got 28 mpg, with much of that driving spent at 75 and 80 mph. I let the Distronic cruise control do it's thing, so the driving was as consistent as it could possibly be. All in all, I was very pleased with the mileage ... Sure beat the Escalade I traded in!

Yes ... 6.2 liters and 402 hp is a sure ticket to burning gas. I loved my Escalade but I don't miss the mileage.

2011 E550 Luxury, P2, etc. The V8!!!!

At 5,000 miles total, did a 3,000 mile trip last May, mostly 70 mph+, mixed flat with some grades. Measured mileage at the pump, got 28+ mpg.

Now at 19,000 miles, just started an identical trip, same weather, same route. It looks like I'm getting 29+ mpg at the half way point. So, ~maybe~ break-in yields slightly better milleage.

I attribute the decent mileage to the fact that the V8 simply loafs along at 1500 RPM on the road, almost ignoring grades.

(Always measure mileage at the pump --- never from the computer.)

My 2012 E550 Cab gets great mileage on the freeway. I drove from Orange County to Los Angeles yesterday, a round trip of 96 miles, including at least 8 miles off the freeway on surface streets downtown. The trip took 2 hours and 1 minute, and I averaged 47 miles per hour. The overall average MPG was 29.4. I realize all this information is from the computer and could be a bit off, but still a large improvement from my 2011 E550 Cab which would have shown around 24-25 mpg at best. I'll try to post a picture I took with my i phone of the readout screen as I pulled in the garage, but I'm not a young technologically inclined guy! BTW I know this is the sedan catagory but the only one on E class mileage I found...

Had a trip on interstate.
480 miles, 6:53 hours, average speed 70 mph, 25.9 mpg.

This is what the car displayed but I always calculate from the actual fuel I put in the car. That revealed 24.9 mpg.

Not bad for a V8 at 70 mph speed.

I have 25 000 miles on it.

Just to everyone to know you cannot trust the car computer fuel mileage. It can be way off and it is more off in city driving. 28 - 29 mpg values come down to 26-27 mpg when you calculate from actual mileage and fuel you fill in.

Trips at no more than 65 mph I have averaged as much as 27.5mpg on long (over 400 mile trips). Go 70 mph and it drops to 26 or so. MY 2010 E350 4M 91/93 Octane Gas. Still under 10K total miles.
