The SOS contacts tele-aid or mbrace while the wrench contacts MB Roadside Assistance

so there is no subscription needed for roadside right, thats free

so when mbrace free trial expires and i dont re up, the sos does nothing i assume

I wouldn't count on the little wrench button doing much after you cancel mbrace although, in theory, it should still work. I've never tried it and I cancelled mbrace at the end of the trial period.

I feel like the SoS button should work even after mbrace ends, sorta like how a cell phone will ALWAYS let you dial 911 even if it dosent have a carrier contract.

It won't work because without the suscription you lose the tel connection. Best to put Roadside Assistance number in your telephone book for easy access. That is why most of the stuff offered by MBrace is redundant. POI will give you most of the information you need.
