Rarely would be a better response. They are difficult to use when making sharp turns. I can't imagine that they would be that user friendly in say the western North Carolina mountains or any road that requires more than 90 or 120 degrees of steering input.
A Stick shift would be better for that application.

Occasionally, when I need them to get in the right powerband (they react very slowly so you learn to act preemptively, kind of like when staging on a drag strip, you learn to "GO" at the yellow light, not the green), or want to pretend I'm playing an arcade game.

No doubt, in Straight line passing the paddles are awesome. Holding the downshift paddle puts you right in the best power band. Mash the accelerator and you are gone!!!
Then worry about the flashing blue lights. They may be for you.

Had two cars with the auto/manual floor shift. Never used them. Have friends who have cars with paddle or auto/manual floor shifts and they never use them either.

I have to admit, other than the fact that there seems to be no other way to choose a lower gear for engine braking, I see no real puprose for them in a car like the non-AMG E's.

Well, I fiddled about these paddle shifters today . I tried D1,D2,D3,D4,D5 and D6 .I must admit may be not using them I felt disconfotable and wanted to get back full auto mode . I discovered that with D6 on the screen , one pull "+" and it was fully D again
Manual mode maximum goes up to 6 speed , not 7 may be this explains when I cruised 1500 RPM as soon as I got into D6 after D5

Torque
That's because you have all that low speed torque that most other E's do not have!
With mine, I simply 'tickle it' a little and I am gone, whereas most gassers need to rev it up
which requires a down-shift to get going. Even at only 60 mph (1772 rpms), when I hit it, it goes.
Got to love all that low end torque.
