Gear Selector Problem

I'm having an intermittent problem with my 2011 E350 Bluetec gear selector. After starting the car, the transmission stays in neutral after selecting D or R. The transmission continues to stay in neutral if I move the selector from D to R or vice versa. The dash shows the gear I've selected but the transmission stays in neutral. The only way to cure the problem is to turn off the car and start it again. The car isn't showing any fault codes and the dealer isn't able to duplicate this intermittent problem. Has anyone else had a similar issue and if so, how was it fixed? Thanks in advance for any help.

I have not experienced anything like what you are describing with my Blutec. I know when it is cold, there can be a delay of a second or two, but, to just not engage in gear is strange.

i think like some had suggested other members for other issues before, take a video and show it to the service adviser and/or tech. good luck!

No, the problem started several weeks ago. The dealer updated the Keyless Go software a couple of weeks ago in case that was causing the issue to no avail. Since the dealer was unable to duplicate the problem, I picked up the car late yesterday and will take a video the next time it happens. Very strange...

We had one in the shop doing the same thing little over a year ago...if memory serves correctly it was either the EIS or ISM but I'm not certin of that. Took forever to figure it out due to the intermitint nature of the issue. I belive we filed a DTS case on that vehicle so the dealer shoud be able to find & it may be helpful in the diagnosis.

I was able to video this behavior last Friday and sent it to my local dealer. I have (another) service appointment next week to get it resolved. They mentioned that the likely cure was replacing the control module in the transmission. Is this the EIS or ISM?

The ISM is the shift motor mounted on the side of the transmission...it's responsible for selecting the chosen gear. The EIS is the ignition switch. The trans module is refered to as the EGS

amcguru - Thanks for the information. I've passed it on to my dealer so hopefully they will be able to diagnose the problem quickly.
